  • ITS ALIVE!!

After dropping a valve while replacing the springs i need for my new GT2 cam, i decided that since i had to rip my heads and intake off anyways, that i would port and polish them all. I did it by hand w/ a friends dremel. It took several (like 20 something) hours to p&p the throttle body, upper intake, lower intake, and both heads. I also replaced the valve that dropped and got the heads magnafluxed to make sure they were still good. Both heads were ok, so i proceed w/ the p&p job. So, finally today i got my new head gaskets and header gaskets in, then immeadeatly i took my stuff over the the local shop here on post and started putting my car back together around 330pm. At the shop closes between 830 and 900 so i didnt quite get to finish tightening all my header bolts and i ran out of time. But i wanted to make sure it would run so i turned the ignition w/ my fingers crossed and it started right up! It sounded so awsome, but the exhaust is leaking like a muther****er so i have to finish tightening up the bolts tommarow and change the oil. I also have some pics on my homepage (page 6), just click my link, cuz its not letting me post them on here for some reason. I really cant wait to see what my baby will do now, with the new GT2 cam, 105# valve springs, port & polished heads, lower intake, upper intake and throttle body, on top of my other mods!! im hoping for low 14's or even high 13's!! i finished tightening down the header bolts and changed the oil this morning. I let it run for about 20 mins then drove it around, keeping it under 3k rpms. Then about 20 mins later it drove into town, about 25 miles in town and back, to see what codes i had trown (my SES light cam on when i drove around the first time) They told me that my misfire code was going off, and that i had tripped two knock sensor codes (not sure what cylinders). Has anyone else had this problem after installing a cam? Plus there is noise coming from my engine, nothing bad, it just sounds like my new OER lifters and vavle springs are breaking in, but im not sure, but its pretty loud. Any ideas guys??

by tuning you mean what excatly. i have a HPP3 so that i can raise my rev limiter and stuff. or do you suggest something more??

well i have to eliminate the ses to pass emissions. hpp3 will raise the shift points and rev limiter. how high i dont know. use 93 octane settings. you may need bigger injectors if you add any other power adders.

the knock sensors reduce timing. the ses is all the cam. has to be deleted

Nope, the misfire code is thrown by the crank position sensor, not the knock sensors. Here's the short version of what these sensors do. The knock sensor is a little microphone basically, and it hears the harmonics of the engine rotating. When it pings, knocks, etc it just pulls timing.

The crank position sensor knows to throw the SES light because it passes a certain point every so often. With a bigger cam, and a surge at idle, it has an inconsistant speed (rotating), and the sensor knows at which point in the cycle it is misfiring, by seeing where the odd speed is. With a big cam, it is random. If it's a certain cylinder such as a bad plug or wire, it will always have thw varied speed at that certain point and will throw that SES light.

You need computer tuning, or a custom PCM. The P0300 code must be deleted to totally get rid of the SES light, Desensitizing the knock sensors would also be a good idea as you are probably getting some KR with that cam as well.
