  • Making an EGR block off plate

Ok, I have been tpying w/ the idea of making an EGR block off plate..

    My idea is pretty simple..
get a little but of sheet steal..
    drill a hole in it..
trace the shape of the egr flange..
    cut it out..
use some rtv to make a "ghetto" gasket..
and sandwitch the little blocker plate into where the egr tube meets the intake..
    and Viola !egr..

The system will still be there in an attemtn to aviod error codes

my question is.. Will this work? Side effects? Are there any problems to worry about w/ pressure on the exahust side?

    thanks for any insight..

yep.. i just ordered the block off plate from zzperformance.

i wouldnt kno how well it works.. i havent recieved it yet.

but for my gasket im gonna use RTV and heavy duty aluminum foil doubled or possibly tripled

I blocked mine off for a year. (on the exhaust side)

I used the piece that hold the tube down. (after removing the tube.) Then I cut a piece of metal about the same size and shape as the hold-down. (the metal was from an old exhaust gasket) Slip the metal under the hold-down, and bolt it back down. No leaks.

It will still set a code. A different code than the one from unplugging the egr.

The code denotes "insufficient egr flow". Somehow the computer knows there is no exhaust getting into the intake stream. (something about the pcm expecting a vacuum drop, or an rpm drop, when it commands the egr valve open, is how it was explained to me.)

I still had the tube open to the air (with a foam filter on the end), so the intake could draw fresh air in, whenever the egr valve opened. Still set a code...

I finally had to put it back to normal when I had to get an emissions test a year later.

Interesting.. I talked to zooomer and he is not sure that that plate fits on our cars.. And not to mention i am pretty sure that blockin it on he exasut side will throw a code as John pointed out..

I think i am gunna give the intake side a try and see what happens.. In theory since all the egr stuff will still be connected and it will have pressure.. thus I shuld avoid the error code..

we will see i guess.. any other people w/ advice?

whats the point of this plate? Why would you want to block off anything?

im making it becuase i broke my egr tube..

plus in florida we have no emissions. its exhaust gas recirculation.. which means it brings exhaust gasses back into the intake. causing intake temperatures to be a lot higher.

the point of this plate is to stop my exhaust leak in the engine bay. by putting a block off plate will block the leak.. and keep intake tempuratures cooler at idle

The ZZP block off plate fits our cars perfect. I used one for about a year. Only because I broke my egr tube and those tubes are expensive. I wouldnt suggest doing it to get more power because thats not what they do.

oh i know this will not increase power at all..

im only doing this !EGR so that my exhaust leak goes away.. the damn ticking noise sucks.

Blocking the EGR will force you to run on premium octane gasoline, it will increase the probability of detonation under non WOT conditions.

EGR harms nothing and it allwos you to have 9.4:1 compression with 87 octane.

For what it is worth to you guys, I have done the EGR reroute and it works very well with no codes thrown, no KR(per Autotap), and no 93 octane. Of course every engine is a bit different and in somewhat different condition. Also, we do not have emissions testing in LA.

To get this to work you must hook up your egr intake tube to a source of filtered cold outside air. Easy to do. If interested in seeing a how to file just e-mail me and I will send you a Word file.

i dont kno who gave u that informatino dominic. i dont see how the egr valve would keep you from using 87 octane on our cars...

i've been using 87 octane since i blocked it.. no problem. no pinging.

besides the fact that i think im running rich do to the fact my o2 sensors arent even hookedu p

I think what dominic is trying to say is that the EGR helps cool the combustion chambers. So if you dont have that extra cooling you could get detonation, but the EGR is not effective at WOT.

I removed my entire egr system a while ago. For a while I did throw codes because the sensor was not there. Now I don't throw any codes. ? don't know why just doesn't do it any more.
This mod did not increase performance at all it did'nt have any noticeable decreases either. The only thing it did do is lose maybe 3 lbs and now my intake stays nice and clean. I only did this because I broke a tube when installing headers.

Heres a question I just thought of. The newer LS1 cams make it not need an egr. Does anyone know how this would work for us?? Or what the numbers for a cam like this would be like?
