• VS Cam??

For anyone who hasn't heard of this cam:

"The Competition cams VS cam was designed for use with totally stock heads. Stock springs, keepers, retainer, lifters and pushrods are recommended.
This cam is very popular as it produces the gains of the 'big' cams without the risks. In stock form the Series II 3800 heads stop flowing better with lifts over .500, in fact they actually flow a little worse! This means that using lifts over .500 with stock heads doesn't help performance it only hurts reliability.

The VS cam uses a tight base on the exhaust lobe and comp's steepest ramp rate to keep the computer happy. This cam does not set the P0300 code and can be installed on a lightly mod'd 3800 all the way to radical. It works very well with an intercooler and doesn't bleed off as much boost as some of the other cams making it an excellent choice for use with a small blower like the M90.

Look for gains of 40-50 hp depending on your car's current configuration."

This was off of this web site:

http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/pro...tition_cam.htm

Okay, hereis my question: This sounds really to good to be true. 40-50 hp gains with no extra tunning involved, this is very nice. Has anyone bought this cam for their 3800 Series II?? I'm assuming it works fine for a firebird since it does have the same engine a GTP has... Someone fill me in, this sounds like an awsome deal. It only $299. 40-50 Hp for $299, damn you can't beat that :D

look for gains of 40-50hp DEPENDING on your cars configuration.... doesnt sound like you'll get that much, thats the max they found w/ a great tuning job on a modified car...

Ok, 40-50 hp at the wheels? Does this have to have some kind of super/NOS/turbo to get these kind of gains? this really has my attetion

Yeah, thats 40-50 hp on a supercharged car, it'll pick up a lot more than an NA car. still even if it made 30-40hp and no codes, and if it adds a little lump in there, that would still be cool. Where does the power come at though?

The 206/212 Compcams grind will work far better with stock heads than ported.

Bigger is not better, especially for our heads, when staying NA. I don't think porting is useful at all for even a cam on our cars, only forced induction.

I have no doubt you'll see a 40-50bhp increase.

I'm not a big fan of the "VS" cam on an NA application..

Lets ditch the goofy labels and look at specs.

This is the "VS"
206°/216° at .050"
Intake Lift .315" (.504" lift at 1.6:1 rocker ratio)
Exhaust Lift .315" (.504" lift at 1.6:1 rocker ratio)
115 Lobe Separation

I think thats just excess exhaust duration. I doubt it will help at all. The lobe separation is kinda wide too.. a tigher 112 lobe sep would do much better on an NA application also.

I have a 212/212 .520/.520 112LS camshaft. I have mixed oppinions about it. It idles rough, does set an SES and makes good power when the car runs right (I have my own issues).. I'll probably upgrade to a 220/224 112LS in the future or something along those lines.

The question is:

Will this work for our cars?

It is made for GTPs which I'm not too awfully familiar with other than the fact that they have a supercharged 3800 Series II. Are the heads, valve springs, etc. exactly the same for a safe and easy install?? Btw, has anyone bought this cam and seen what it can do?? This is way better than a Powerdyne if it really works, same Hp for $3500 less, yeeeeeeeeeah....

Yes it works for our cars. And no it won't give you as much power as the powerdyne supercharger, but would greatly compliment it.

206/212 113LS should make for a better NA powerband than a 206/216 115LS.

magnus, you think this vs cam won't do anything at all? why is that? i'm curious as well, because for a cam that you only need the cam to install it (no new parts), doesn't set off an ses light, cheap and affordable, doesn't need computer tuning, and won't kill gas mileage, this sounds like a pretty darn good deal. for $300, i think anyone of us would take even 20 hp, and especially more. what do you think magnus?

What Magnus saying is that for NA use, a tighter LS is better. It won't hurt you to use a 115LS NA, but you would benifit more from a 112LS. For Nitrous and Supercharging/Turbocharging, it would be better to use the 115LS though.

if I know my COMP cam lobes correctly, that camshaft uses the 4x4 extreme ramp lobes.

I would definately change pushrods and springs to use that beast... to be safe.

I think it will help no doubt, but if your going to do a cam swap, why not get something a little more ideal?
