All I can say is wow! The more you talk about this the more I want to do this to my engine.

for those of you that dont check camaroz28.com:
disclaimer: i posted this there in the v6tech forum, and got a question as to what its costing me so far. so here is my current breakdown. please no "this is a waste of time why did you do it" -- the answer to that question is, because i wanted to. and if you are gonna reply with "well yur stupid for doing this" or, "the 3.4 is weak" -- dont bother ill just ignore ya.
anyway, on to the post:
...
um. well. with all the stuff ive done:
eBay
Heads: 50.00
lower intake from a 1996 Grand Am GT: 10.00
Fuel Rail: 35.00
Running Total: 95.00(not including shipping, but that was like an extra 10-15)
Junkyard
Upper Intake from a 1996 Grand Am GT: 50.00
(stupid me didnt get the TB or fuel rail -- i probably could have gotten it for like 40.00 or less)
Running Total: 145.00
www.grandamgt.com
Upper Intake from a 1999+ Grand Am GT: 50.00
TB: 20.00
Running Total: 215.00
Rebuild
Coast Motor Supply: 1163.00
Running Total: 1378.00
The ONLY reason i did the rebuild is because my thrust bearing took a crap. im pretty sure i caused it, just not sure how. neglect i guess. im gonna do my part to take better care of the car, so i dont have to do that ever again. barring the rebuild, the only thing that would have to be changed in the block are pistons, which you can get for like 550.00 from Ross Racing Pistons -- and they will be forged (better for performance) -- the type of pistons you need: pistons from a 1997 or newer 3400 engine - due to the fact that the DISH is bigger in the piston. therefore there is more combustion space, space gained back from the heads decreasing in size.
(heads go from 53cc to 28cc, if you keep the stock 3.4L iron head pistons, your compression ratio goes from like 9.0:1 -> 12.5:1 (sounds like fun but say hello to 101+ octane in your daily driver)
anyway..thats it so far. actually with all the bull**** ive had to purchase, its probably cost me closer to 1800.00 -- and i know. you can get a used LT1 for less than that -- but then you are gonna run into other parts needing to be bought, which will probably run up to the same cost.
thats it so far. o yea, i didnt get a chance to run the car today. had some epiphanies...bad ones. :(
had to cut off some stuff, and having to fabricate a pipe or two. ill keep everyone posted.

I don't know man,I think that building the 3.4 up like that is better.Especially for only $1800.You get a brand new motor that will kick *** and get good gas mileage.Plus that thing looks sweet in the engine bay and you can always pop the hood ans say "look at my one-of-a-kind!".Congrats on the rebuild.

wOOt! :D :D she runs!!
ill have video and pics tomorrow probably. gotta go and work on the engine the rest of the week, still have exhaust to put on, driveshaft and torque arm, as well as radiator hoses to connect and a few elbows to put on..
but..
SHE RUNS :D
im excited now o yea, for all of you that have been following this, everything is a TIGHT fit. im talking less than an eighth of an inch between the plenum and cowl. i mean TIGHT. but it looks beefy tho. fills the whole engine bay. doesnt move a milimeter when the gas is applied im very excited and cant wait to get it running and break it in and then take it for dyno #'s and track #'s.
heheh. almost there boys and girls

I know i know...this post is huge and is getting stupid. im sure thats what everyone is thinking. but, i have to post in here, id like to keep it all in once place in the interest of archives.
WARNING!!! this video is HUGE - 20mb in size. if you dont have a broadband connection, expect it to take forever :-p/
video for saturday's start-up and run of the hybrid 3.4
but all i could say when i heard the car running was: - it sounds awesome (thats open header btw) - note: its quiet cause its only idling at 500 rpm, and the "clanking" noise is a pipe i didnt quite get secured down before starting the engine...
anyway, happy watching.

If I remember correctly SFI is just a slightly more advanced version of MPFI. I think the proper name for SFI is sequential multi-port fuel injection. I could be wrong so someone correct me if I am.
BTW Russel, OMG that thing sounds awesome!

no problem.
1) the fuel injection is controlled by the ECM, not the fuel delivery system itself. i had to use the stock fuel injection harness from the 3.4L RWD engine (some creative work there) and all that, but it worked out fine. I didnt have to reprogram anything cause all the sensors and whatnot were the same.
2) stock 3.4L RWD camshaft for now.
3) pistons made for the Gen III Aluminum heads.
4) lots actually. mostly little things. had to play with the fuel injection harness to get it to reach the new injectors. had to relocate a sensor and so some cutting of pipes. still working on a way to get the EGR to hook to the intake (for several reasons, one being that im in California) - had to make sure the pipes would all route right..etc etc. but all in all its worked out nicely. the majority of work has been on making brackets and stuff to have things fit up. had to modify the alternator bracket (behind -- that attaches to the head) as well as a few other things. all nitpick work...
and nova i think you are right. SFI is MPFI, but instead of batch firing the injectors (all at once) it fires only one at a time (sequentially with the ignition timing)
