• LS1 ENGINE SWAP is COMPLETE details inside

this post is for those people who actually do a search for engine swap and might come across this thread.
i have a 2000 V6 camaro and am putting in a 28,000 mile LS1 from a 2000 SS. i purchased the motor from http://www.tacreationsusa.com i guess i got lucky cause they had put it on ebay for starting bid $3000 for the whole kit and kaboodle. i called them after watching the auction go on forever without 1 single bid and told them i was willing to pay the $3000 for the engine. they said ok. that was great because i had just thought about buying a 50,000 mile LS1 for $4,200. the engine came with all the belt driven accessories/tranny/and even oil still in it.

for the swap i also needed to obtain these parts. an LS1 steering rack, an LS1 radiator, an LS1 gauge cluster, an LS1 engine cradle, an LS1 gas pedal, and an LS1 airlid. dont forget an alignment when all the work is done.
you will need a bigger exhaust as well
i already had a stock Z exhaust on my car.

so far for prices:
engine/tranny/blah blah $3000
used steering rack $100
used radiator $80
used gauge cluster $50
used engine cradle $free i got lucky and found a guy giving his away after putting in a BMR K member
used gas pedal $25
used airlid (aftermarket) $70

total price in parts needed: $3,330

total price for installation: $1,100 <--this included a $45 alignment which was done at a dealership.
granted my mechanic gave me a hell of a hook up. he says if he was to do it again he would charge $1500. he and i go way back so he always hooks me up.

my total swap price: $4,430

now what you might want to know is what my mechanic found out doing the swap.

1:the fuel line has to be modified...no big deal, but now i am going to carry a fire extinguisher in my car for safety.
2:the coil packs in the V6s use 1 fuse. the coil packs in the LS1 use 2 fuses. this required some searching through wires, but my mechainc was able to splice into the one fuse and now both sets of coil packs work. before the splice, only one side of the engine was sparking.
3:the air bag light is on. i imagine i can take the car to a dealership to get it reset. will try in the future.

other than that, my mechanic said the swap was pretty straight foward.

i hope this thread helps those that need help or inspires those that need inspiring.
best of luck to all you swappers.

btw, the LS1 is WELL WORTH IT!!

Yeup, you ahve to bend your old fuel line to use the new LS1 fuel line with T fitting.. and you need to move the power wire on the front harness as well.

Congrats!

Your air bag lights should not be on, that is a seperate system.

maybe it is cause the engine and gauge cluster are from wrecked cars???

i really dont know, but mine is on.

Nino, I have a fix for the air bag light. Okay, so it's a simple solution, but doesn't really fix anything. My car has been wrecked so the air bag light is constantly on. I got tired of it, and last time I had my dash apart, I decided I would remove the bulb. I found out that it wasn't that easy. The bulb is soldered onto the cluster board. Anywho, I was gonna jam some plastic in there and fill the recess that the bulb goes in, but..... I found something better. We had a Bake Caliper Bleeder Valve Cover. You know, the little rubber cover. Well, I just put it over the bulb, and put the cluster back together. I haven't seen the light since, but after seeing it two years, I almost miss it. Almost. Oh well, I'm rambling.

update and some afterthoughts:

picked up some stock Z28 front springs for $20

about the LS1 radiator: you do not need an LS1 radiator, but if you stick with the sock V6 radiator it will require some modification and and an LS1 radiator tank. i thought it easier to just buy a used LS1 radiator for $80.

about the LS1 gauge cluster: you do not need it, but if you keep the stock V6 cluster your tach will not work. there is a part you can buy to make it work, but again i thought it easier to just do it right the first time. besides it is so cool to see 150 rather than 120.

i am buying a fire extinguisher and a hypertech 180 thermostat on the recommendation of my mechanic. i already had plans on buying a HPP3 because i have 3.73s and i hate not knowing what my correct speed is.

mpg did not change much if at all compared to the LS1 and my modded to hell V6. nor did my insurance rate, but i have not told them yet, nor do i plan on telling them untill they ask.

My insurance through Progressive didn't go up at all when I traded the V6 for an SS. I asked why and they said that they had recently done (this was back in Aug 02) some restructuring of what factors determined what prices... and the V6 vs V8 insurance was equal.

edited above post to add alignment.

you will aslo need an alignment after the motor is in.

Where can you get the part to make your V6 cluster work with the LS1, and how much is it? I've been driving around with my cluster 20 mph off for about 3 months now.

If you have a stock LS1 fuel pump and the take, and the fuel lines from a z28 what all do you need to change as far as lines, whats the difference in the lines on a 2002 3.8?

I'd like to know this as well. I've got a wrecked Z28 in the garage to swap the LS1 into my Firebird. What would be the best thing to do if you've got the whole car (Z28)??

What's the gas mileage in numbers on average?

My insurance company lied to me... what a shocker... so my insurance is around $300 a month for a 97' V6 with no claims, no tickets. I was thinking before I got my insurance bill that I'd like to get a 1994 and do an engine swap to LS1 whether the 94' was originally a v6 or not. Now that I got the insurance bill it really makes it practical (cheaper), about $133 a month instead of $300. I was even thinking for the difference in the cost of my car around $9000-10000, I could get a decent body 94' paint it and replace a lot of the suspension with new performance parts. The only thing is gas, right now I get 23-25 mpg with 80% highway driving and thats 89 octane. I don't know if I could stomach real low mpg especially when putting in premium.

If you're looking to mod it there's no point in doing an LT1 to LS1 swap, the engines have about the same potential, and parts are expensive for the LS1. Buy a V6 car if you're going to swap an LS1 into it.
