• Cutting off speed limiter for a 96?

First of all I HAVE researched this before and what not so don't flame me and say I didn't do research before oyu read what I have to say. I was under the impression that it couldn't be done on 96s and 97s. I thought no one made anythign to do that, you're only option was to send your pcm to zoomer (I think thats who it was) and he could send it somewhere or something. Here's the real thing that i was looking into which is why i asked the question is because i'm going to do a gear swap from my crummy 3.08s to something like 3.73 or 4.10s and i didn't want to completely lose my top speed......BUT i found this thing called a jet scu 2000 for 96-99 automatics only at ammperformance.com.

The JET SCU 2000 (Speed Control Unit) interacts with the vehicle speed sensor on late model GM cars and trucks. It allows transmission shift points and speedometer calibration for vehicles where tire size or gear changes are required. It also eliminates the top speed limiter in these applications. It simply plugs in to the transmission and is adjusted with the turn of a switch.

The JET SCU 2000 (Speed Control Unit) is intended ONLY for 1996-1999 Automatic transmissions.

How would you plug that into your transmission.... At the bottom I am including the link to the exact page at ammperformace i was at and saw it for our cars. I was just curious if this is real and will work before i buy my gears and change my stuff on my 96 and it doesnt work and them i've blown money. Thanks guys.

It intecepts the signal from your VSS(vehicle speed sensor) to your PCM.

As for the speed gorverner, yes it does work. There is a jumper on the SCU and if you have it in the position for the speed governer to be off, what happens is at 110MPH the speedometer stops, but the tach will keep climbing. So after 110, you have to drive by the tach, but it will keep pulling.

Oh ok. Thansk so much. I was about to order it last night and then I decided that I would wait and make sure it would work before I went and did it and it didn't work for me.

This confuses me. I bought my car used. It's quality for the most part, but there are a couple of things that definately aren't normal. One of those is the governor... I got it up to somewhere above 120 (the speedometer hit that a pegged it) for a while before I had to slow down, but I was in fourth, just about to shift into 5th. I have no idea why, but I don't think I'm gonna question it. It's a 99 3.8, by the way.

I think Tiago is addressing this issue by another approach. Hopefully you will be able to keep your speedo. It's know fun not knowing how fast you are going.

Unless the person before you had the governor removed, you can only go 115MPH. If you were at the top of 4th about to shift in 5th, it sounds like you were only doing 115. I hit the limiter at around 4500RPMs in 4th. The most you could probably get out of 4th is maybe another 10 MPH

              118 acctually :D

if he can get another 10 MPH that puts him at 125 which would be pegged on a 120 mph speedo... If I'm way off track It's prolly cuz It's 4:33 am :D
