  • 3.4l tear down

I'm tearing down the whole engine to get it ready for machineing and I got the timing chain off (I shot paint on the chain and gears to mark them just in case) and I took off the main bolts (also put them in # mark baggies matching the number marked mains) but now I need to know how the hell do I get the mains out and what do I need to do to remove the cam.

A mallot to knock them loose. Also, Cloeys makes a double roller timing chain and adjustable gearset for the 3.4s if you are interested.

to get the mains off take the bold put it half way in and hit with a rubber mallet and for the cam you need to pull the plate off where a distributer would be and pull the gear out thats holding it in

i just gave the main caps a few taps from behind with a mallet and they broke free.

and definetly get a new timing chain/gear, as for the roller one, if ya got the money for it, might as well

ok I got the hold down deal off of where the distributor would be and now how do I get that cap off, all it does is spin. I put a screw driver under it to pry it up but it broke it.

The thing is pretty difficult to get out of there. It does just fit in there with a rubber o-ring seal. Get something with a little more leverage to pry it out. It definitely will come out.

you have to put a bolt in the one end of the cam where the gear was so you can roll it around and while doing that then you pry up and it shoud come up theres a little gear on the end that is turned by the cam that turns the oil pump
