    -82 Ignition control 3X
    control 3X
    signal error

ok, for some reason I'm thinking crankshaft sensor (3X). For the obvious "3X" reason.

    symptom- missing/poor idle @ first start-up/
    lack-of-power/back-fires

anyone with info, or input on the OBD1 code?

I don't know for sure but I would assume it is the crankshaft sensor because that wires into the ignition control module. Check the wiring to make sure the connections are good before you replace the sensor itself.

So far i'm getting continuity from the sensor to the module. I'm also gonna take the coils off and inspect the module. Hopefully the problem turns up here, cause it's sort-of-a-B*tch to get to the sensor with the starter partially in the way.

It could be a problem with the module. Take note of the resistance value across the sensor and the resistance across the terminals for for the sensor on the ICM and post them and I will compare them to my values. I'm also having trouble which I think is caused by the ICM. It started out with rough idle/misfire and now I can't even get the car to turn over. I've got a replacement ICM on route right now.

The 3X signal is sent to the PCM and is generated by the module itself. If either the 18X or sync signals are not recievd by the ICM it can not generate the 3 X signal. Also the module can be getting the signals and be faulty causing no 3X to be sent. Onlt way to know what is going on is with wave form veiwing.

If I were to take a guess..... it would really be a toss up between crank and ICM. crank sensor takes more of a beating.

I thought you could test the crank sensor by checking the resistance when you crank the engine. As the crank goes around, you should be getting pulses from the sensor. I would bet that it's the ICM, when mine went out on my last car it had all kinds of misfires and wierd behavior.
