  • Blew Head Gaskets....

Well Sunday my radiator over flow tank busted and drained all the fluid (I guess the ****ty electronic gauge didnt work and said temp was 210 the whole time). Engine started rattling because oil got so thin.

I replaced the tank today, filled it with coolant and it missed pretty badly and exhaust smelled like anti-freeze. Oil was clean though. No coolant in it.

I guess tomorrow the cylinders should be filled with water if its the head gaskets and we'll drain it.

How do I check if my heads are warped? Straight edge on all corners or is it so slight it cant be noticed. Hopefully my heads arent cracked.

I'm ordering some gaskets and we're doing it this weekend I guess. Damn this sucks.

I really want to say GD GM plastic SH*t tank but I'll probaly get flamed. lol

I'd like to get a set of SSM heads but this happened at the absolute worst time and I have no money. :(

Engine over heated earlier that day to past 260... When I noticed it started over heating then I popped hood and put it in nuetral. Tried letting it cool off idling but had to shut it down hot because that wouldnt work.

If you use a straight edge, you better make sure that straight edge you use is VERY straight, and then get some feeler gauges. I believe that you take the straight edge diagonally along from one side of the head to the other, and if there is more than .003" warpage within a 6" span, the thing has to be either resurfaced, or replaced.

That's probably the worst thing to do. When you're sitting there idling, there's no air flow to help cool it off. Idling is when the temp will get the hottest.

I've always been told to let it idle to cool off. I'm taking them to machine shop to get checked out.

There's not really any air flow unless the fans are on anyways, and at the temp it was at they were full blast. Nothing flows through the bumper anyways and the air dam doesnt bring much up.

I could understand wanting to keep the coolant flowing to try to cool it down, but idling will just raise the temp more.

That's not really true. Driving down the road there will be alot of airflow through the engine compartment. While you're driving the temp will be the lowest and the fans will be off. Stop in traffic and the temp will shoot up and the fans will be forced on, struggling to keep the temp down.

^ which is why you most often need a lower air dam when buying a ground effects kit ;)

I know how things work on paper as far as the air dam works but I just cant see it flowing air throw the radiator like a normal truck would get it t cruising speeds.

I'm going to get some head work done. I might go to SSM but I'd have to wait 2 weeks for the heads to get back.

its common sense man.....sit idling in traffic for 15 minutes. then go drive down the freeway for 15 minutes and see where you have lower coolant temps.
