How much does FI change things?

Basically, I found out my girlfriend's dad was an old car guy... He stroked engines and rebuilt them from the ground up and knew how to do all that stuff I know nothing about.

Basically... I was talking to him about possibly putting in a better camshaft/rockerarms/whatever but he said he did all that stuff before fuel injection... Would his general knowledge still be enough to get the job done?.... Or would we run into serious issues?

No. The 3800 is a 90* chevy motor, he should have no problem if he knows the small block chevrolet.

All pushrod motors work basically the same. The difference between our FI and carbueration is that carbs are a wet system and we have a dry induction system. If you look at some old cars, a lot of them will bolt on tuned port injection on their old 50's and 60's cars that originally had carb.

The manifolds will be different. Unbolt the manifold, plenum and fuel rails, you have just another pushrod motor.

thats why i said "more than enough to get by"...a motor is a motor, if he can do one, he can do all, the only differences are the bolt patterns and torque specs...

It's a Buick motor, and having a fulie is just a different type of induction system. Anything that can be done internally to a carbed engine can be done to one w/injection, w/more control over fuel delivery throught the use of pcm/programming.
