• LS6 or get an SS

my dad wants to trade my 99 a4 in for an SS... Would it be a bad idea to do an ls6 conversion instead? has it been done? will it be faster then an ss?

Hey if Dad supports the SS, and he can afford it, then I say go for it.

LS6 would be a pain, I'd say get the SS. Theoretically, it would be faster, but the SS with a bolt ons and some long tubes may be about the same power output as the LS6 would give you.

Uhm, depending on what year SS you get, it could be an LS6 anyway If you don't know if you can handle the conversion, chances are that you cannot. So buy the SS instead, and save the headache.

the ls6 won't fit in the camaro engine bay. You would have to chop the frame and extend it about a foot I blieve. That means new custome made fenders and hood, possibly front bumper cover made. Not to mention all the electrical and possible drive train work. Like tranny driveshaft and rearend. Plus suspension and all the other things that you might have to swap to get it to work. In the long run just get the SS.

The 2001-2002 LS1's had some LS6 components, but never the whole LS6 engine

Excuse me? I've seen it. I worked at an LS1/LS6 speed-shop for a year. Some did, check the casting numbers. Also, it is those components that make the combo stronger, not the block anyway. If you ever get the chance to see a Darton sleeved block, chances ae it's the LS1 not LS6 because Darton believes them to be stronger in such instances.

Also, the LS1 and LS6 blocks have the same dimensions...Now GM even has one part number to cover both, instead of two seperate part numbers (meaning if you go to buy a new block now, you are getting an LS1/Ls6 block, and can only get it that way unless they have one of the old ones laying around).

Anything else?

if it hasnt been done on here then you can be the first. and just imagine all the people who will want to follow your steps.
6s.......under the hood or under the belt, they just dont cut it.

Never heard of a Camaro SS coming from the factory with LS6's. Got a link?

And yes I'm aware of the similarities, I've helped with installing heads on both.

Just so we're on the same level, I am talking about COMPLETE LS6 engines. I'm aware LS6 blocks were in a few later models.
