Z28 Speedometer

could i get a z28 speedo to work on my car? Would the I be able to keep the same mileage as whats on my car? The reason i want this is i'm moving the top speed limiter off of my car and i also have no idea how fast ive gone in my car because it only goes to 125! Would i need to get my PCM programed for it? would it work?

Above the speedometer limits, you can still tell how fast you're going by watching the tach, since both the M5 and the A4 (when the TCC is engaged) have a direct link to the driveshaft. The engine RPM's and speed always stay correlated. So for example, my car has 3.42 gears, stock rims and tires. At 80 MPH, my tach is always at about 2600 RPM, at 95 it's at 3100 RPM. Every 500 RPM increase equates to 15 MPH:

2600 RPM = 80 MPH
3100 RPM = 95 MPH
3600 RPM = 110 MPH
4100 RPM = 125 MPH
4500 RPM = 140 MPH
5100 RPM = 155 MPH
5600 RPM = 170 MPH

So in theory those with 3.42's could go a little faster than 170 before redlining it. Of course different gears will have different RPM's.

i have the Z28 indiglo flame guage face...i just bought a tiny "yellow box" from blackrobotics.com...it just splices into your speedo wire and you set it to correct the speedo for the new change...cost about $100 or so and was really easy...you can turn the box off while your not racing so that it wont effect your mileage

If you use a speedo out of an LS1 or LT1 it will plug in fine and the speedo will not be off, however the RPM will be. The RPM will read 25% less then the motor is actually spinning, since there are 25% less cylinders on our cars.

So you have a Z28 speedo in your car? Does the "yellow box" correct the RPMs?

I hope you plan on stating that the mileage on your car is incorrect next time you list it on eBay.

yeah..it looks pretty awesome at night...it doesnt seem to effect the rpms ...the mileage is correct...i didnt want it to effect the mileage on mine either so i only turn it on at the track...the rest of the time i just know how fast im going based on where the numbers were on the old speedo...the gauge face i had just for show originally...so i didnt care where the needle was...but when i started getting more into performance i bought the yellow box because i like to get an idea of how well i ran by checkin the speedo when i cross the line

Dakota digital makes a tach adapter interface. Is that the piece you're talking about? It will adapt the tach signal.

Shouldn't need to modify the speed signal. The pcm handles this based on the gear ratio stored in it.

Unless you're talking about changing the face only, and want the v6 sweep to be altered to match a v8 face? Then the odometer will be off, and depending on where you put the "box" the pcm may see the wrong speed. (which will mess with shift points, ignition timing map, etc.) Better to swap the whole cluster and leave the vss signal alone.
