  • 3.4L Crank Shaft Position Sensor?

    Does this exist on the car? where? can it go bad? How can I fix it? is it a PITA or hard?
    just need some info
    i think my starting problem may be from this, please help!

        Hey guys, new to this board, but many of you may know me from the "other board". Hope I can help you all as much as you have helped me.

        As far as the Crankshaft position sensor on the 3.4L...
        It actually has 2;
        One is a 3X Crankshaft position sensor and is located on the passenger bank of the engine. If you go down the side of the engine block from the number 3 exhaust port, you will be right behind the compressor and right in front of the starter. There will be a sensor held into the block with one bolt. That is the 3X CPS. It sits almost right below the knock sensor. The 3X CPS provides a signal through the electronic ignition control module which the ECM uses as reference to calculate RPM and crankshaft position.
        The second is a 24X CPS. It is located on the front engine cover and is held in by 2 bolts. If you look at about the 2 o'clock position of the harmonic balancer, you will see the sensor with its wire leads coming off of it. The 24X CPS is used to improve idle spark control at engine speeds up to approximately 2000 RPM.
        Both are relatively easy to access so removal/installation shouldn't be too difficult, but I have never had to get into it myself.

          could one of those sensors be effecting my car from starting? It takes about 4-5 tries to get it started now. I will crank and it wont fire at all, i let it sit, (build up pressure in fuels system, smae problem)
          And i was thinking that if one was loose or went bad, it wouldnt show an SES light.
          any more info or pics you can gove me would be awesome! thank you so much, you answered my Q in full

              Yes, this would keep the car from starting because it is not giving the ignition system info about the crank position and when to fire on what cylinders. If there is no output from one of the two, particularly the 3X CPS, it will not fire at all.

              Also, the camshaft position sensor is used in timing the injectors for sequential injection. If this sensor fails or is faulty, the computer will not engage the injectors.

              My suggestion would be to have it hooked up to a computer to see which sensor it not creating output and go from there.
