Sounds like a throttle posistion sensor to me...but cover the basics first.

Follow my how-to above on the timing.

More info:
Before you crank the car, disconnect the number 1 wire boot from the #1 plug, and hookup that timing gun spring to the plug, then snap on the wire to the other end of the spring. Make sure its connected. Try as best you can not have it lie on the manifold, if it does, it won't take that long to set the timing.

Where is the number 1 cylinder? It is the first plug in the front of the engine on the DRIVER's side. FYI here is the pistons if you are facing the motor:

Pass Driver
*<===Distributor
8 7
6 5
4 3
2 1

Start the car now and make sure the gun is out of the way obviously...obviously assuming you have done the above steps and losened the hold down bolt to the distributor as well.

Unplug that EMC advance wire and you'll hear and obvious change in engine sound it will almost die probably, however it WON'T miss. If its missing, check the connection of the timing gun to the plug/wire. Make sure you're in shade or your won't see the gun flash mark on the crank.

Point the gun at the crank pulley and squeeze the trigger...You'll see the mark lining up with the marks on that little metal piece. It's probably dirty or rusted, you MIGHT have to clean it. Lean over the engine carefully and turn the distributor COUNTERCLOCKWISE to advance it till its moved up to *4 ABOVE zero, this is ADVANCING the timing. I would not go above 4* advanced mechanically because you want the car to start easily and run 87 octane without knocking.

Go ahead and shut the car off and plug back in the ECM advance wire. Tighten down the hold down bolt just a tad with your dizzy wrench and start the car. Does it start easily? good. Take it for a drive and see how it runs...if it runs good and you don't hear it knocking obvious sound get back home and tighten the bolt down and you should be good to go.

If it knocks or is hard to start it will act like the battery is dying, slow hard cranks, losen the hold down bolt and turn the dizzy cap CLOCKWISE to RETARD the timing. Set it back to 2* and see how it runs...it may make you leave it alone at Top dead center, which is 0*...this is what GM called for in the L03 motors regardless.

Remember to just tighten down the distributor again and see how it runs...oh yeah, obviously remove the timing gun during test drives.

P.S. - Those rims are worth more than the car lol!! Good find! Hell, if you ever want to make it a pretty beater, go get it a crappy paintjob at maaco or econoworks for like 200 dollars. Who cares if it goes to shizzle in 3 years.

If I had a car like that, I'd go spend the money on painting equipment and try to paint it myself

my girlfriends brother has a bunch of car ****, im going to take the camaro over there to give it a compression test. that will tell me whether buying parts for the engine is going to be worth it or not... if it passes the compression test, then itll be new distributor and rotor, spark plugs and wires, coil pack..

ill probably see if the timing is off before the compression test since that will need to be fixed regardless..

hopefully it passes the compression test, ithink it will pass and then its just a thorough tune up and the camaro will pass smog!

ok so i am trying to do the timing but everytime i unplug the plug from the dizzy on the right side the car dies immediately...its a plug on the driver side.. im going to leave it in and do the rest of the process and then i can try again with it running a little stronger maybe.. i dont think the computer controls the timing that much right?...

You must set it with that wire disconnected. Are you sure you're doing it correctly? There are several back there. Its on the passenger side, like a greyish connector thats laying aside close to the firewall. Should only be a 1 wire pigtail.

Sounds like it slipped timing, check it, then compression, then full tune up. -Tim

slipped timing?

i finally figured out how to set the timing, the thing was kind of eratic in its flashes, like i could see the notch 5 times in a row then like 1 time the notch dissapeared... so the flashes arent constant..

also it was already at 2* advance... so i set it to 4 and did a "spirited" drive, it didnt make any knocking noises and it seemed to rev better, i think the real problem lies in the tranny... also when sitting stopped you get a headache and it smells bad, i think ther is an exhaust leak somewhere under the car maybe... also there are lots of little vaccum hoses popped off in the engine bay, they wont stay on the nipples and what not, need either new hoses or some kind of clamps... and uh....yeah other than the tranny, vaccum, and the asphixiation, i think the motor is fine....ill get some video recording of it and you can hear it rev and whatever. thanks for all the help so far!!! if i have to get a new tranny, what would the price dif be between a manual and an auto, i might try to put in a manual instead...is it very hard to convert the car?

Yes its equally as hard to convert that car to a T5.

700-R4's are cheap like I said before. Cost your 350-400 bucks for a rebuilt one.

If its flashing erratically, probably a spark issue. Cap/rotor/plugs/wires

awesome... i am going to do a compression test now... any idea what kind of numbers i should look for?...

i figure since i have to remove the plugs for the compression test, ill just do the test and see how the engine turns out, if its having horrible compression and the enging is shot then i wont bother with plugs and wires, but if it passes decently, then ill just leave the camaro sitting there with the plugs out and go get some plugs at kragens or something, might as well hit two birds with one stone right? so compression numbers are what im lookin fer now haha. thanks so much for the help man i would be sitting on my *** scratching my head still if you hadnt helped me out so much, THANKS!!!!!

No problem. Compression numbers? Let me get back to you on that...I dont know that off the top of my head.

Glad to see you're going to have fun with it. You will learn a lot with a tinker car like that.

You know, in my short experience with cars (about 4 years) I have never had to run a compression test.

damnit i had this huge post writtn up but i got some freakin retardedd error anyways heres the gist...

Pass Driver
*<===Distributor
8 7
6 5
4 3
2 1

i did a compression test on 1,3 and 5 and i got the following
Cyl 1 = 188
Cyl 3 = 179
Cyl 5 = 185

i need to find the compression of the other cylinders and waht the compression should be, my service manual has a big fat "N/A" for what the compressionm should be for my engine.. wtf...
anyways
once i find out if my compression is good or not i will replace the sparkplugs and wires, btw the cap and rotor were replaced and the dizzy was in horible condition, i took off the plug and thought i had the wrong dizzy cap because the wires were corroded to the distributor caps little prongs and actually pulled them out of the plastic leaving holes... so yeah bad...

anyways the engine oil and tranny fluid are really dirty, probably going to buy some **** today and replace that but im not going to do anything till i find out what i need to know about the compression! thanks!!
