• Raising rev limiter on stock valvetrain...

I am kinda iffy on doing this....

but what are your guys toughts on raising the rev limiter on the factory valve train. Also think it will be beneficial to the point of it worth doing? I shift right nearly at 6k so close sometimes I bounce off the rev limiter.

I was considering raising the rev limiter to 6100 maybe 6200...

Any thoughts on this or am I wasting my time and putting an unneccesary risk to my motor?

    NO!

    2 reasons:

    1. You will get valve float. The springs are too soft.

    2. Our cars (at least the 2001s) have some sort of limiter that HP Tuners can not see. It kicks in at 6000 rpms and cuts power. It is very obvious on the dyno. Just run bellow 6000 and you will be getting the best you can.

fwiw craig has his set at ~6600 with him shifting at like 6500...we havent had any problems with a "hidden" limiter either.

I didnt think a stock cam would like revving that high, but I guess so with his times.

My experience: I was running my auto to 6100-6200 with the DHP computer I had on a stock engine. I was getting valvefloat above 6000, but drove it like that for a year with no problems. Then I replaced the 110k springs with some low milage stock ones and the float went away. Now I have hp tuners and turned it back to 5800. My best time and trap are with the higher shift points, but I have only raced once with the 5800 shift points.

The limiter he is talking about is just 4th gear.

I spun to 6300 for a while on the stock valve train. Eventually your springs will weaken and you'll start floating the valves.

gotta wonder the shape his springs are in then...hes made like 200 passes...probably 1/2 of those with shift points of over 6300 rpms...not sur ehow many miles are on his car but I would think over 50k now. Wonder if he got some ls6 springs if he'd gain anything.

Almost 60000 miles and 183 passes. My light is set to 5600, my rev limiter is 6550. The unseen limiter to which art refers I think is the Spark Threshold? Anyway, I have that set to like 7000 just to get it out of the equation.

you have your light set at 5600 but where does hptuners scanner show your hitting while free revving between shifts...i remember 6500 and thats why we raised to to over that so as to not hit the limiter ;) looks like someone really needs to get a little faster on those powershifts lol

It all makes sense now. Damn flat shifting to 6500 with no load. My auto always flat shifts. ;)

I'm out of gear by 5800 and free rev to about 6400.

The limiter is not the spark limiter, mine was set above 6600. I was running up to 6600 on the dyno with 105# springs and the horsepower drop of was very obvious above 6000. No valve float with the X-P Hot cam and 105# springs. Did four pulls, all showed the drop off. Spent some time trying to get some answers but no one knows what it was. I just put my shift light to 6000 so I was not counting on any power above 6000.
