Higher Mileage LS1

My cousin just wrecked his in his driveway (yeah i know...) and probably won't fix it since he only has liability. I'm thinking if they want to get rid of it, I'm going to buy it and have everything except the suspension at my disposal.

Thing is, the engine and tranny have over 90K miles and its a 98 or 99. I know, to be safe, I'll probably redo rings and gaskets and all that but assuming thats done, is there anything else that may need to be taken care of if I can get my hands on this. By need I mean the enigne won't run well or long if I don't. I just don't wanna end up spending more money in the long run then if I bought a newer low mileage LS1.

As a side note, who the hell hits two trees in their own back yard in the middle of a dry warm day..... This is why 16 year olds don't need LS1s.

First of all, your gonna be told to search, because this topic has been talked about many times before. But if your gonna redo the rings and whatnot, it's probably not a bad deal. You just have to be careful, because he's only 16, and he may have beat the hell outa that engine. But if you can get the car for cheap, donor cars are your best bet for swaps.

Yeah I searched and all but I didn't come up with anything other then rings, gaskets and bearings being replaced. But I've not heard anyone dropping one with such high mileage like this in before. Just wanna make sure before I drop some money on this that it won't be pointless to do.

He hasn't had it for very long and still has his permit so hes not done a whole lot of driving yet.

In July I put a '98 with 85,000 miles in mine. I cleaned the pistons, re-used the rings, no hone, put fresh bearings and oil pump in it.

Also heads, cam, headers, and ls6 intake. And good ol' hptuners too. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Put down 392rwhp on the dyno in August. Running strong. No issues.

If it's a '98, you'll have a little more work to do for the swap. If it's a '99 it will be a little easier.

Damn, how long are LS1's supposed to last? Are that unreliable? i mean I know they are all-aluminum, have a fairly high CR, and are in the finest point a performance motor, but I figured an engine under 100k, should still be ok. Not needing a ring job and bearings, etc. I dunno.

hmm...
my brother has a 1998 90,000 mile LS1 (put 60k on it in 1.5 years!!!), he keeps the fluids changed and everything in order, no problems...

a friend of mine recently sold his '98 formula, had 116k on it, didn't burn or leak a drop, ran great...

ehh it was more of a precaution type thing. I'd rather change em with the engine out of the car then get it in there and find out after 10K miles I was screwed and had to pull the engine to do it. I have no clue how it was driven before my spoiled cousin had it but I do know he obviously didn't drive it well as he hit two trees in his backyard.

Either way doesn't matter because they're going to fix it for him.... pretty much spending what they spent on the car already. Wish I had parents that drop that kind of cash on me AFTER I screwed up like that lol.
