First, I know you find your topic name humorous. But please, next time, try to make it a little more descriptive. maybe "How much can I bore a 3.8". This is the Advanced Tech section and all topics will be archived for future referance.
That being said.
I doubt you'll get an answer here. Nobody that I know of bored out their motor. As you know though, you would definately need custom pistons/rods.
If your really that serious though about making HP, I would do heads/cam first before you drop the big bucks and bore out the cyl's.Keith - Chicago<br /><a href=\"http://www.hptuners.com\" target=\"_blank\">HP Tuners - PCM Reprogramming</a><br /><a href=\"http://www.dxsoftware.com/magnus/\" target=\"_blank\">97 Firebird V6 to LS1 swap</a><br /><b>V8 9.967@132.78</b> 1.322 60\' NA Heads/Cam<br /><b>V8 10.295@128.48</b> 1.363 60\' NA Cam Only<br /><b>V8 10.987@119.31</b> 1.422 60\' NA Stock Internals<br /><b>V6 13.674@98.22</b> NA<br /><b>V6 12.394@104.91</b> N20 100HP

boring would not get you much more power. even .030 over you're looking at like 5-10 additional. listen to father magnus and do the heads and cam first.i was swimming in the carribean. animals were hiding behind the rocks except for the little fish, but they told me the squid\'s trying to talk to me. oink, oink. where is my mind?

 DAMMIT!!!!!! I'm so incredibly tired of hearing that line! If the solution to everything is to swap an LT1 into the car, then why is this board around? Most people here are trying to see what they can do with their 6, nobody wants to hear this about an LT1 everytime they ask a question! If you don't have anything constructive to say, and all you can say is "just drop in an 8", please refrain from posting. Thank you.

When someone tries to take on something more expensive then LT1 swap that won't make LT1 power then why waste the time and money? I didn't tell him to put an LT1 in there, I said it would be cheaper.

Don't you think he'd like to know that he is wasting money and be better off doing it a different way?
If you don't like my replies please refrain from reading them or commenting on them. Thank you.

I'm going to have to agree with Dom in part.
I do think it would be easier to just drop an LT1 in the car. Your going to have to pull the block out anyway to bore it out.
If I could swap motors with a LT1 or LS1 for free I would in a heartbeat.
Relax Dom.
Everybody wants to do their own thing and while their oppinions may differ from ours, we have to respect that.
I say again, I don't think anyone has bored out their block here or anywhere actually. You might get better luck talking to special mechanics or machine shops.
Definately not worth the $$$ imho.Keith - Chicago<br /><a href=\"http://www.hptuners.com\" target=\"_blank\">HP Tuners - PCM Reprogramming</a><br /><a href=\"http://www.dxsoftware.com/magnus/\" target=\"_blank\">97 Firebird V6 to LS1 swap</a><br /><b>V8 9.967@132.78</b> 1.322 60\' NA Heads/Cam<br /><b>V8 10.295@128.48</b> 1.363 60\' NA Cam Only<br /><b>V8 10.987@119.31</b> 1.422 60\' NA Stock Internals<br /><b>V6 13.674@98.22</b> NA<br /><b>V6 12.394@104.91</b> N20 100HP

The only way anybody could know if it was cheaper or easier is to have actually done both. Otherwise, you are stating your opinion. And everybody is entitled to his or her opinion. However, since this is the Advanced Technical, not the General Technical board, I think it would be better to keep the opinions, which by the way are not based on facts, to a minimum, and just answer the questions as they are asked. I'll bet that a great percentage of topics in this board are either more time consuming or costly than an engine swap. Just doing heads, a cam, and rocker arms could cost more than an engine swap. If the people who post here are only concerned with cost, then there really wouldn't be a reason for the Advanced Technical board. All he wanted to know is how far he can safely bore his block. He didn't ask how much it would cost, or how much work it would take.

I priced out the swap once for $2000. How many of us have spent more than $2000 on engine mods? Should we all have just swapped an LT1 into our cars?
I'm sorry, but I just don't think it's right to answer the question "How big can I bore my block" with "who cares, it's too expensive. just put in a new engine". If you don't know the answer, then don't post. Magnus, you're the one who wants to keep things tight here in the Advanced Tech, I just don't see comments such as these from people who just seem stupid appropriate for Advanced Tech. And Dom, this is nothing personal, and I'm not flaming at all, so please don't take it that way.
Lastly, dstrbd1, I know the 3.4L can be bored .030" over. Not sure about the 3.8L.

Enough, the both of you.
The question is:
just wonderin if i could bore the engine .030" over safely or if that would be too far for a 3.8. goin of the monte carlo intimidator, it's bored about .010" over. is that the limit, or can i go further without hitting anything else?
If you can't contribute to the answer, no need to reply.
If he wants some info about the cost, he will ask. Until he does, I will delete any more replies that don't help this guy out.Keith - Chicago<br /><a href=\"http://www.hptuners.com\" target=\"_blank\">HP Tuners - PCM Reprogramming</a><br /><a href=\"http://www.dxsoftware.com/magnus/\" target=\"_blank\">97 Firebird V6 to LS1 swap</a><br /><b>V8 9.967@132.78</b> 1.322 60\' NA Heads/Cam<br /><b>V8 10.295@128.48</b> 1.363 60\' NA Cam Only<br /><b>V8 10.987@119.31</b> 1.422 60\' NA Stock Internals<br /><b>V6 13.674@98.22</b> NA<br /><b>V6 12.394@104.91</b> N20 100HP

well, sorry bout the title, it was late and that was the first thing that popped into my head. as far as it being cheaper/easier/whatever to do a swap, i could, but then i'd be like everyone else, wouldn't i? i do plan on doing the heads and cam first. believe me, in my head lie the plans for a unique, and hopefully powerful, engine that'll put me into 13's n/a. just wonderin if my ideas are realistic.you can\'t get off if you don\'t get on

Actually there was a guy that did bore his engine on another board and had a 3 angle valve job and cam. He said the gain was 75hp and he had it bored at .030 over anything more and you will be in the water jacket. The guy im talking about is out of AZ and he has since sold the v6 for a v8.

gotta call BS. even if he did bore his engine over. and got a cam. how did he tune it? tuning isn't available till now. ricecooker has a damn aggressive cam and P&P heads and intake and he saw only 35 hp without tuning. boring it out .030 over would not add another 40hp. even in a v8. i think he was BSing you.i was swimming in the carribean. animals were hiding behind the rocks except for the little fish, but they told me the squid\'s trying to talk to me. oink, oink. where is my mind?

Sorry deuce but your wrong. He did not tune it. He ran around with an ses light unplugged. Bill Spano may be able to recall this guy as well.
I questioned his gain claims also but I was only making the point that he bored his 30 over.
