    this is one problem so far. the mechanic hasnt looked at the other side yet. being this is advanced tech can someone teach me about broken valve guides other than its gonna cost about a grand to fix. so far i know i smoke alot and my track times suck! the mechanic did say at least i did not drop a valve! whatever that means
    6s.......under the hood or under the belt, they just dont cut it.

    well....

    if it's the same thing i am thinking of a valve guide is a kinda plate on each valve just a guide plate don't see that costing a grand to fix i must be misunderstood about what the problem is

      i think he said guide. i really dont know what he said cause i am still in shock. he said he was going to have to take the heads off and take something to a machine shop. i would quote you what he said, but i cant think straight right now.

        while the mechanic is down there- in the guts of my engine, is there something else i should look into upgrading?

          I think what he meant by drop a valve is the valve actually becoming detached from the spring and falling on top of a piston. Yea that dont suprise me it cost a grand to fix. Taking off the heads isnt easy.

            ok so he didnt drop a a valve but i had a brain fart i guess and thought he was tlaking about the guide plates for the pushrods lol i knew i had to be misunderstanding

                  The valve guide is a cylindrical insert that goes through the cylinder head. It is made of a harder material than the head, and it's purpose is to support the valve as it moves up and down to control the flow of air/fuel or exhaust. The stem of the valve is inside the valve guide.

                  When a valve guide fails, it can crack, or the repetitive motion of the valve movement can wear out the inside of the guide and elongate the hole, allowing oil from the engine into the combustion chamber (this is why your car is smoking). In addition, the elongated opening can cause stress on the valve, since the valve head does not land squarely on the valve seat. This puts an unintended side load on the base of the valve stem (where the stem meets the valve head) and could cause it to break.

                  If the hole has elongated, I would get it fixed ASAP, I lost a 327 Chevy motor when a worn out valve guide caused the head of the valve to break off the stem and drop into the combustion chamber. The block, piston, head and connecting rod were ruined in this event. It broke when I was cruising down the freeway, not during racing.

                  Before I paid someone to pull off the head to fix this, you might get a second opinion from another mechanic.

                      i had the same problem in my 96 camaro i tightened my rocker arms too tight and broke a valve guide i then took the heads off and got them rebuilt for about 350.00 then it was fixed... tell the machine shop to replace your valve guides, springs, lifters, valves, locks, and retainers
