• New Engine Done, Look Inside for Details and Some Info for Other Rebuilders

Just got back from my mechanic's place and here's the news on my new engine and what all has/is being done:

2002 3800 Series II Block / Heads
Head Valve Job / Cleaning
Block Cleaned / Bored 0.030 Over
Sealed Power Pistons / Rings
ARP Head Studs and ARP 2000 Rod Bolts
Clevite Trimetal Main / Rod / Cam Bearings
FelPro Gaskets All Around
Hot Tanked Intake Manifolds and Front Accessories
Pacesetter Ceramic Coated Headers / Y-Pipe
No Cat / Caspers O2 Sim

This thing is so nice looking I could have crapped myself when I got there. Everything looks perfect! As far as boring it 0.030 over, he said it would be fine as long as I didnt use a power adder which I wont be. Here's the prices for everything from the receipt I got..

Sealed Power Hypereutectic Pistons ------ $182
Sealed Power Rings ---------------------- $146
Clevite Bearings ------------------------ $100
Fel Pro Gaskets ------------------------- $175

Cylinder Boring (0.030 Over) ------------ $80
Press Work (in sets) -------------------- $36
Valve Job (V6 Heads, pair) -------------- $80
Miscellaneous Cleaning ------------------ $40
Disassembly / Reassemble Shortblock ----- $215

I supplied the other parts such as the headers, rod bolts, head studs, etc. Got them from Intense Racing, ZZPerformance, etc. I will let you all know how it runs come Monday when the engine is in the car and running. Should have some sound clips and video clips too soon after its done, my exhaust setup for reference is:

Pacesetter Ceramic Headers / Y-Pipe, No Cat / O2 Sim, Hooker 3" Catback Exhaust System

Have a custom 3.5" mandrel bent jet-hot coated cold air intake too with a green performance air filter.

Well, basically a year ago i picked up a 2002 engine longblock just in case mine died. A month ago it died. When i had the new engine's heads pulled it hadnt been run or anything but there was some rust in the cylinders and the heads needed cleaning and such. So I had the block cleaned and bored (needed new pistons b/c there was rust on them, so I got it bored 0.030 over and got the right size pistons), got the heads cleaned, bought some goodies for peace of mind (arp studs / rod bolts), and had it professionally setup. I want it to run like a champ and run for a while so I put some extra dough into it, plus the labor was... affordable I would be glad to give this guy a reference for anyone in GA who wants him to do their work once I get the car back running as he has been awesome all along! Just for information here are the complete totals it will be running me:

2002 Longblock - $850 shipped, no miles, needed work
Engine Assembly / Swap - $900
Machine Shop Labor - $451
Total Parts Cost - $1100 (includes headers, cleaned injectors, gaskets, new pistons/rings, etc)

So.. $3300, fully done with plenty of upgrades and professionally installed. Not too terrible overall considering I got a few quotes from GM for over 3K for just the longblock! Although very affordable in comparison to what Im getting, my budget is limited so no cam/heads will be going on anytime soon. Next chunk of change will prob go into a rebuilt tranny with a torque converter, ls1 driveshaft, and an eaton posi 3.42 rearend, eventually....

is .020 over to much for a heavy boosted engine??? I hope not. My machince shop quoted me somewhere in the $1000 area. I never thought of getting the accessories hot tanked.....

Well 1DangerousV6, thats nice to hear. I definately wont be worrying about problems with it 0.030 over now since Im not using a power adder at all. Way I figure it, my next set of cash will be going into some bolt ons, I'm curious to see how much horsepower this combo will make:

Increased Bore Size (0.030)
Mandrel Bent Ceramic Cold Air Intake
Pacesetter Headers
No Cat
Hooker 3" Catback
Meziere Electric Water Pump
Aluminum Driveshaft
SLP 1.8 Roller Rocker Arms

Should be set up pretty darn well for a highway/topend runner (very free flowing exhaust and some topend horsepower boltons)

Any guesses to the rear wheel HP/TQ with this setup? I have everything now but the water pump, driveshaft, and rockers.

if you don't have the monye to do the hole the hole motor wait and do it right, your wasting atleast $800 to go back and do the cam later

Forget having it bored .030 over. Buy HPTuners software, or drive down to TSP and have them tune it. Add FI and you're in business. You'll be satisfied with it NA for awhile, then you'll want more. In that case, you won't be able to go any farther.

Thanks for the support... This car is not a race car, its a daily driver. I needed to fix it, so I did, plus some extras that were affordable. Please keep bashing comments to yourself.

I was kinda thinking the same thing, all that and no cam? But i know how it is to be tight on funds and reliability is sometimes a bigger issue then speed. Anyways good luck with your new engine. Let us know how she runs for ya. Got any pics?
