• question inside about rocker arms...

well this is a tech type question, but its about rocker arms so i figured it should go here.

shes back runnin on all 6-cylinders. still getting a SES code, but i figure thats from the fact i havent reset the ECM in a while. anyway -- my q:

today i went to replace a sensor, went to start the car, nothin doin. wouldnt go, do, or even try to do, anything. so we towed her up the hill she was parked on, and let her go and i coasted down the hill steering into the garage so we could replace the sensor. so we do that, still nothing. wont start.

so.. i take my dad up (mr. i dont like ecm'd cars or working on them at all) on his idea of looking at teh rocker arms, cause he is convinced that the valves arent opening right. i take off one of the valve covers, lo and behold, the rocker arms (After testing) are ALL loose. every last one was so loose i could run my hand across them and move them with just the touch of my hand (without grabbing and moving). so we readjusted them and now it all works.

my problem is tho (my boggle?) -- how did they come loose in the first place. we had tightened them down before. cant figure out why they would come loose after the lash had been set. (we tightened them, put the valve covers on, put the engine in, attached everything and the problem got progressively worse).

cant figure it out for the life of me. any ideas from the technical people?

    thanks in advance...

You have to tighten them down when the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke.

What I do is torque all rockers down to the tq spec.. it will take several engine rotatations.. then rotate the engien a few more times.. then tq them all down to spec again.. then add in your final 90 degree turn.

If you torque them down when the lifter is up in the air you'll reach your torque spec too soon and when the lifter goes down you'll have quite a bit of lash.

There should be zero lash btw, we have hydraulic lifters.

Oh you have a 3.4.. I'm not sure if they have hydraulic or solid.. I would guess hydraulic though.

Be sure that you are using 10mm rocket adjusting nuts and not 3/8. I have run into a problem before where we accidently used the 3/8 rocker adjusting nuts and they quickly came loose after starting the car. If you need some new ones, call CompCams and tell them that you ordered a rocker arm and pushrod kit and the nuts that they sent were 3/8 and you need the 10mm. That is actually what happened to me, but I caught it before installation. They will send you a replacement set of nuts.

Ok, so tell us what this upgraded intake is. Some of us 3.4 guys are curious to the extreme. ;)
