So are stronger springs and retainers required with this mod?

not required by any means..

james did it becuase his motor has a deasent amount of miles on it.. and wanted to replace them anyway..

however!
you can jsutify them becuase they do lighten the valve train a little.. and with stiffer springs you could make your engine run up in higher rpms a little safer I suppose..

regardless you dont need them..
