  • Rebuild WORKED BUTT>>>>>

Well I finished my car up last night w/ the help of Pgriffith. Well I get the starter hooked up today and go to turn it over for the first time. Nothing. The starter kicks out but dosent seem like it is either engauging on my flywheel or the drive shaft is bound somewere. So I am guessing I will drop the trans again. Hook the starter back up and try to turn my engine over w/o the trans on. I wish I would have thought of doing that before I hooked it up.

Any suggestions on the problem before I go ahead on my idea? I am calling a mechanic to get the double check. See Preston I knew it was OK not to fill the trans last night? I just saved 2 qrts of fluid

Hmm.. if your just trying to start the car and its not turning I'd check these things:

Auto: It's fine don't worry about tranny
Manual: Sure your in neutral? Clutch disengaged?

I doubt its any of the above problems..

If your engine won't crank, could mean something is lodged between piston and head.

Can you crank the engine by hand?

Its a manual and it is in nutreal.
I am 98% sure I could turn it by hand before I dropped it in. I am thinking that it would just be easier to drop the trans and see if that is the problem, then it would be to pull the motor again.

      Thanks for the help.

Here is a long shot... Don't manual cars have a mechanism from preventing the car from starting if the clutch isn't engaged? Did you make sure that the wiring for that is all connected and in working order?

I dont think thats it because I can hear the starter click. When you try to start a manual and the clutch isnt in the starter wont even click.

I honestly dont know. But Like P just posted, the starter trys to engage I think. My uncle who is a mechanic is going to come by and check it out tomorrow and see what the deal is. Hopefully its not to bad.

On a side note. When I put the new bearings in I used a high temp poly grease that Chiltons called for. I was talking w/ my brother in law and he said I should have used just good old oil. What did you guys that have rebuilt use??

That starter just clicks. I had it tested though and it was OK. I am probably going to hook it up but not bolt it on and try to see what happens. I am not sure about the nuetral safety switch is hooked up....Can you give me an idea of how to tell?

I re-read the responses, & yeah, if it doesn't even make a noise, then it is either the nss, or the batt. Since the starter clicks, I think it might be the batt. Charge the sucker, or get it jumped & try to start.

I have tried to jump it. And it still just clicks.

Well I guess you get the W for today. It was just a battery and it turned over.

                              P yea it started.
Tiago I jumped the sending unit with a paper clip and it spiked my gauge inside the car. So I dont know if that says anyhting. Should I get an OEM sending unit or just something form Checker?
