i remember reading on a firebird v6 messageboard a year or two ago that getting a cam for the 3.8 was impossible. i read that the cams that GM put in the f-body's was a hardened cam, and that you couldn't get a hardened cam anywhere else. And if that you had gotten someone to make you a cam that it wouldn't last very long because its not a hardened cam that went into the f-body's. The cam would last something like 18k or 20k miles and then die on you. how much of this is right and how much is wrong?!

I believe there are a few people with cams in the 3.8 now and others looking to get them I know you can get a custom ground cam from SSM and comp cams can or does make a cam for us. I'm sure there are others but they are out there. As far as specific tech questions I'm sure the guy with the cam that moderates this forum (Magnus) can answer them!

Myself and a few others are running a re-ground stock cam. I personally don't believe that hype about a hardened cam and it causing failure. But if it is a concern to you get a stock cam that has been reground from www.supersixmotorsports.com
I have been running my reground cam since Oct of last year with no problems. Runs like a champ!
Or you can go with the custom grind from Comp Cams that Magnus is sporting. There are also a lot of L67 car running the comp cam.Michael Huff
92 RS, 98 V6, 97 SS, 00 Z28
http://www.carolinafbodyclub.com/

This maybe a stupid question, but how exactly does a cam help? And I have been thinking about doing some internal stuff to my 3.8 and what other things can I do when I do the cam? Rockers, etc. etc.?CarDomain Page

There is a dyno graph at www.grandprixstore.com they show a dyno proven L67 supercharged 3.8. Motor was all stock except the cam and gained 22.5 HP and 25 TQ. I know the supercharger dyno may be different but just to give you an idea. I think I remember reading somebody getting 25 HP from a SSm regrind. But I cant remember who.

i know people have cams and what not and they work and they are amazing on our cars. but that wasn't what i was saying. in our cars are hardened cams. i was read numerous times that another cam would work in our car, but not for long. after so many miles the cam would fall apart or whatever.
IronMan...how many miles have you put on your caM?\'96 Quasar Blue Firebird A4
jamiethekiller@comcast.net
my band: woodland

It's not that they couldn't just "harden" their own cams, it took so long to get them because they had to wait for GM to give out cores.

It was me that picked up 25rwhp with a combo of:
SSM cam 210/214 113l/s
ported intakes/TB
MAFT+ for tuning
I have about 3-4K on my cam. I don't drive my car much, but when I do they are hard miles. I have a 92 for a daily driver.
A while back I remember reading a thread about a bad batch of cams made for the GN 3.8 and how they fell apart and caused motor damage. Maybe that is what you are referring to.Michael Huff
92 RS, 98 V6, 97 SS, 00 Z28
http://www.carolinafbodyclub.com/

hmm... i read all of the info on i think v6fbody.net. they could of been just making assumptions off of the gn 3.8 fiasco. i'm not sure and i'm not cam expert here. i guess since ssms have been doing cams for a long time now they would know if something wouldn't work and all that jazz.\'96 Quasar Blue Firebird A4
jamiethekiller@comcast.net
my band: woodland
