There are MINOR differences but nothign that will prevent you from bolting things together.

Newer engines have holes where the red dots are which hold in the rubber gaskets that go there.

That's all I know of so far..

Oh yea, injectors change between 97 and 98 I believe. 98 have thinner injectors, 97 style are more bulky.

EVAP setup changes as well between 97 and 98.

Well thats not a problem i am going to build a engine from the block up and transfer over some parts from my 2000 to complete the swap. Also i have another question i have on my injectors the little small wireing harness whice is not letting me find and injectors to upgrade is the like an adapter that goes from small injector wireing harness to large injector wiring harness kinda like the LT1

I noticed on Edge_24's '96 block he has these white caps on the side of the block, they look like a drain or something. There is one on each side. My '98 block does not have these and I have no idea what they are used for.

Also the sensor on the back of the alternator is different from 96' to my '98. Thats all I really noticed. I think any 96' up block will work. There is no major change that will make it so you cant use the block.

98 Firebird - gone from mod mode to keep it running and useable mode.
