  • 3.1 heads the same as 3.4?

    Well nobody answered this in general tech so I am posting it here too.

    Are the heads from the 3.1 the same as the heads on the 3.4?
    I can get some 3.1 heads for free, my dad can port and polish them, and I can get a valve job free too, so aside from all the work I have to do I can get a lot of head work done for free if these 3.1 heads are the same.

    3.1L and 2.8L heads are both from 60 degree v6s(like 3.4L). If you did P&P, valve job, and got better valve springs it should be great. I imagine they would fit right on.

              no they arent if they are aluminum heads. the design is different. cc size is less and the compression ratio will be rediculously high and not streetable. there is a person that has done this swap, his name is russell. he no's all about this and he has alot of knowledge of the 60* engine also. not saying that noone else has as much experience, but he is one person that i no of that has done the swap succesfully.

              rock on,

                IIRC Russell swapped 3400 FWD 3.4L heads onto his L32, not 3.1 heads.

                    Yeah, right now the only thing russel has on his thats from a 3.1L is the upper intake. Last I heard he was trying to get that swapped to a 3400 series intake as well.

                      let's keep this technical specific,
                      3100=fwd & aluminum heads
                      3.1= rwd &iron heads

                      3400=fwd & aluminum heads
                      3.4= rwd & iron heads.

                      I belive 95Batmobile is inquiring about the 3.1 heads off the 90~92 F-bodies.

                        Yes that's right.
                        So will everything swap from my 3.4 to the 3.1 heads? Or like you said previously, the spring seats and springs are bigger?

                            Aren't the valves different sizes between the 3.1 and 3.4 heads? I know that 2.8 valves are smaller than the 3.4s and I was pretty sure that the 2.8 and 3.1 had the same heads. I may be wrong though.

                              No dude, I appreciate you helping.
                              I am trying to get the best out of my 3.4 whether it be using the 3.1 heads or the 3400 heads, but either will be P&P with a valve job.

                              I just want whichever will work the best b/c I don't know if my valves and stuff will fit if the 3.1/3400 is a bear head. Know what I mean? I want to make sure stuff will swap if it needs to be.
