  • CAM: This could be interesting

I just ordered a cam from comp this morning.

    lift .496/.480
    dur 200/206
    LCA 112
IC 113 (I am not 100% sure on the LCA/IC)

I looked in the engine tech database, and I didn't see anyone else that has this cam.

The late Dominic Orlando recomended it to me. Desktop dyno says it will put me at around 300hp, but that program is scandalis, so I will tell you what kind of power gains I get the new cam in.

I hope MAFT will allow me to compensate for all the extra air.

Anyone got thoughts on this cam? Dominic sure liked it.

Just curious how much did you pay for it and how much is it gonna cost to install?

Oh and 300 hp from just the cam (and probably int.and exh.) i dont think so. I may be wrong but i would want to say more around (tops) 230-240 RWHP

No dynos for hundreds of miles. I live in a podunk town.

The 1/4 mile strip is closed for the winter too.

The best I can do to show you power increases is make before and after passes with my silly little Gtech pro meter. It won't be accurate, but it will give you all an idea of the power gains.

230-240rwhp is about 300 or so shaft HP. I always tell people shaft HP, since it is higher. ;)

I bought the cam directly from comp, and it was $315. I found it at ammperformance a few minutes later for only $286, but I think the comp guys tech advice was worth the extra $$$.

I also bought new hydraulic roller lifters from comp. My total was $500. DId I need the lifters? probably not, but the comp guy really recomended them, and I would have spent that money on stupid stuff anyways if I had not bought them.

I realized later, that this cam swap will nickle dime me to death, I really ought to get new: valve springs ($80-$150)
          retainers ($20)
          timing chain(or gears?) ($???)
crapload of expensive gaskets ($shutter to think)
          pushrods ($???)

Should I get all that new stuff or not? I am daily driving the car, so I need a really reliable valvetrain.

As far as the install... I am going to half to buy my roomate like 3 or 4 cases of beer to get him to help me install it. I will however, end up drinking most of that beer on my own, so the implicit labor cost will be around $20.

i'm runnning that cam. not even one problem with it.not ses light. i have to run a dyno to see the gains.is not a radical cam, but you can feel the diference in power.
            also i'm using

            stock lifters
            stock pushrods
valve springs comp cam Part# 26918-12
            retainers comp cam Part# 774-12

            here is the sound clip

What lobes are on that cam? The lift seems low. Perhaps its the less agressive lobes. The XE lobes will make more HP.

It's a mild cam. If you're really looking for power you have to up the intake to at least 212 and the same with the exhaust. If your looking for a mild extremely streetable cam, that one is good.

I know what the lob sep is, I asked what grind type the lobes are.

There are several different style lobes you can get for our cars.. mild, XE and 4x4.. 4x4 are the fastest ramps.... XE is your standard aftermarket cam... Mild I'm uncertain about.

That seems to be a mild lobe grind.

COMP CAMS grinds "especially" for the V6 aren't that great. They deal with a TON of aftermarket and engine lines.. I wouldn't take their advice over whats proven in the actual 3.8 world.

COMP also keeps their stuff more mild and streetable, helps prevent complaints from people who can't deal with the chop or fail emissions.

It's mild as Keith said all of Comps grinds especially for the 3.8 are mild and very streetable.
