• bypassing evap emis cnstr purge sol valve

i'm in the process of disabling the emissions controls on my car. i have a 2002 L36. I can't just remove the items, because we DO have visual road side inspections here, so it must look like the systems are fully operational.

any ideas on how to bypass the evap emissions canister purge solenoid valve?

it's plastic, and is located right after the TB, on the upper intake manifold, beside the fuel rail disconnects. if you look at your engine bay you'll see 3 flexible fuel lines. two go to the fuel rail, the other goes to this valve.

one problem is i dunno how that purge valve actually works. I'M ASSUMING it purges when it reaches a certain pressure. anyone else know for sure?

if the above is the case, then i could just block off the valve at the upper intake, and install another purge valve somewhere hidden (at gas tank) which would just vent the fumes to ambient air.

thoughts?

Earth to awesomeame! Why bother? The evaporative emissions system does squat to overall engine performance. It does do a good job of controlling pressure build-up in your gas tank so that the next you pull the gas cap you don't get sprayed with fuel!

Hey awesomename, all ideas are worth a shot. I had a few that got laughed at too.

it must do something. it sprays fuel fumes into your intake. it's after the maf, so maybe: fumes = less o2 = rich, no?

ever hear of running on fumes? you wont get that far if you continue.

wow.

It just vents off gas tank pressure, it has ZERO affect on performance.. NONE.

I did remove my ENTIRE EVAP assembly for weight savings. My tank is vented manually now into the atmosphere. *shrug*

tisk tisk... venting into atmosphere is frowned upon by the epa types...

disabling evap on obdii will only give you a ck engine light with no performance gain to show for it.
evap is pulse width modulated in conditions off idle, to burn off evaporated fumes which are contained in the closed fuel system becasue the epa does not want hydrocarbons venting into atmosphere. you may see a slight increase in running temps if your fuel trim cannot compensate for the lean condition created by removing canister purge.

how can it be pulse width modulated when there are no wires going to the purge valve? hence why i think it vents when a certain pressure is attained..purely mechanical...

purge control solenoid operates via pwm from the pcm driver. this commands manifold vacuum to be switched on and off to suck in vapors in canister.
when the solenoid receives duty signal it applies manifold vac to canister hose, letting fumes enter the intake manifold.
the map is one sensor that will monitor this to make sure it happens. along with the o2's in closed loop.

oops...went & looked at it after i posted that & there are wires going to it...my bad

thanks for the insight, strange_trp. i guess if it only operates at idle, i'll leave it alone

doesnt operate at idle. operates mainly between 15% throttle and all the way to WOT. but even at WOT its not hurting anything because its kicking in hydrocarbons. not worth messing with really.
i have seen situations where the canister got saturated and long term trim was like -17% and steady. then i might consider pulling vac lines and using a few golf tees hehehe.
i hit the dude up for a half hour diag time and an hour repair. was working for ford-lin-merc-mazda at the time.

i'm sure there are other things you could do to make the ck engine light come on that would be more worthwhile

well i already installed my cam which keeps the light on all the time, & my winter mod money is now spent...now i'm looking for cheap/free stuff to mess with, like this :D
