well, this is just a general question. i wanted to know what kind of benefits and downsides there are to putting in an aftermarket cam. other then the obvious answer of better performance. i was considering getting the 210/210 gt comp cam or maybe trying to design one that was a little less aggressive so that i didn't get the multi-misfire ses light. but what i was wondering was how changing to an aftermarket cam will change the life of my valvetrain. because this is what i read on the compcam website:
"In applications requiring stiffer springs, valve train life will be reduced. Remember the stiffer the springs you install the harder your valves will be smacking the heads and the less life you will get out of your valve seats. Your timing chain will stretch much sooner and the chain tensioner will have to be replaced more frequently. When using 130# springs if your valve tips are not hardened they will wear VERY quickly. Using roller tip rockers can help but the proper solution is using a hardened tip valve. Si valves use hardened tips as do the factory valves. "
now, if i get a cam i was going to put in some stiffer springs and new retainers, probably (not sure exactly, i haven't done that part of my research yet). just how badly does putting in a cam hurt your valvetrain? my car is a daily driver and will be for probably the next 5 years or so. after that i am going to keep it for a sort of hobby car. would putting in an aftermarket cam be a bad idea? any opinions appreciated.
sorry for the long post
