• LS1 ? for Magnus or anyone else that may have input

I am going to buy a used LS1 from TACREATIONSUSA.com and I want to rebuild the engine. I am going to replace the heads with some patriot LS6 stage II and add a new cam, but what I am really concerned with is refreshing the bottom end.
I am only shooting for 400rwhp and TQ so I dont want to make a 383 or anything. Basically just make the bottom end like a new engine without going extreme. Should I hone the block and re-ring the pistons or just leave it alone?
How should I go about freshening up a used LS1 block?
Thanks Shane

you could, but, since your just going heads/cam, it'll probably be ok. how many miles on the ls1? if there's not to many, it'll be ok, if there's alot, i would say at least tear it down, and put new bearings, gaskets, etc.

It all depends on the miles, I am definately going less than 50K. Thanks for your input.

Keep in mind, early LS1 blocks (pre 2000 I think) have almost no extra sleeve material to be overbored. Later LS1 blocks have larger cylinder bore sleeves to allow the engine to be bored over and rebuilt. Resleeving a block is very expensive as far as I know.

New rings and bearings are always good unless the motor has very low milage. When it comes to a performance engine, even 25,000 miles can be alot. If you replace anything, it would be the rods and pistons. If you want the peace of mind of an aftermarket rod then spend the money. The stock forged pieces "should be" suffient for the power you want, assuming it's NA.

Patriot stage 2 heads! We've had great results with them thus far, and it's only getting better. Ask for me (Matt) when you call and I'll help you get whatever you need. Just in case you need the number it's in my signature. If you're going to do have the block apart and checking out the bottom end, it might not be a bad idea to put some new pistons and/or rings in there. Let me know if you want some pricing on those as well.

First off this engine will be strictly NA! After doing some more reading I need to keep this motor very streetable so Im thinking of going with a 224/224 cam so maybe the 5.3L heads may be a better choice, but thats a whole different topic in itself.
I am not looking to bore it .030 over or anything I just thought that if you changed the rings you needed to clean the bores out so that the rings break in properly? I guess overall I want to revitalize the stock block, just for piece of mind. Clean all the junk out of it and build it up to be a dependable motor with a long life.

We are doing a head swap "experiment' tomorrow and the enxt day for an article in GM High Tech performance...we are going from stock to the LS6 Stage 2 heads...however, the guy already had the 5.3L heads on, and we will be able to see what kind of gains the LS6 heads have over the 5.2L stage 2's with similar conditions. I am expecting a decet gain by going to the LS6 style heads. I'll let you know how it goes. We had one of our cars go 10.78@124 NA with the LS6 heads and cam package, Pasecetter headers, TCI 4400 stall, and 4.10 gears. About 3300lb race weight.
