  • GT cam and ported heads installed

Over the last few weeks I installed ported heads/intakes/TB and a ZZP GT cam. Overall things went pretty well. Car is running but has a few issues.

I could use any advice you guys have.

    Issues:
    1. Rough idle (j/k, it sounds awesome , check it out. http://www.glue.umd.edu/~kraeuter/video.html )
    2. Car loses power. When I give it gas it either hesitates, stumbles, or goes and then cuts out higher in the rpm range. I think that this could be KR, low fuel pressure or too small injectors. My autotap is having issues so I can't really make any runs, it seems to have burnt out my serial port on my laptop or my cable is bad.
This problem could also be caused by questionable lifers. Most of them were not pumped like the installation reccomended but 1 or 2 were pumped, I attemtped to bleed them all out but I don't know whether it worked or not.

    3. Exhaust leaks, I think I fixed this with paper gaskets and ultra copper for the header to head connections.

    4. Slight tapping sound at certain rpms. This is barly noticible and could be cuased by the previous problems.

    Things I've tried.
    1. Full tank of high test gas.
    2. Reinstalled MAF screen.
    3. Fuel injector cleaner.

So far things have been getting slightly better the more I drive it, this is just what I've noticed so far.

Magnus, I remeber you had some issues similar to these with your install, what do you think.

    Thanks,
    Jon

Try some race as to see if it's real knock retarding your timing up top. Mine was not real, and I ended up "desensitizing" the knock sensors to rid myself of the problem, difference was night and day before and after.

autotap and watch the KR. My car like many other V6'ers was pulling BIG amounts of timing. That was the source of all my problems.

Ok, I'll take some logs as soon as I can. What is the process to desensitize the knock sensors if that turns out to be the problem?

It's good to know someone uses the search button.... I seriously do not condone simply adding resistors in line w/ the knock sensors. It should be a last resort. Every attempt should be make to elimitate that it is true knock b/f desensitizing the knock sensors. B/c if its true knock and you desensitize it you are likely to suffer possible engine failure.

One 'old school' hot rod trick is to wrap the knock sensor threads w/ teflon tape.

Uh oh, old school tricks... do you have to walk 15miles up hill in the snow to get the tape? or is that optional?

What size resistors do you have to use? How many oer knock sensor do you have to use? One last question, did you actually cut your knock sensor wires completely off then put a resistor in between the sensor it self and the other end that is cut off?

There's a way to partially desensitize them. You still have the sensor hooked up, just the computer because of the resistors will not read as much knock.

What ohm resistors do you use? One for each knock sensor right? Do you just cut the kncok sensor and put a resistor between the pieces you cut?

Seppo used 2 100kohm potentiometers which are like variable resistors, that way you can vary the resistance to however much you need. I used the same circuit as well.

Make sure you lower plug gap when doing a cam. you should be around .055 and sometimes they get larger on their own. I would check that.
