• Does the belhousing bolt pattern change throuthout the 3.8 years???

This is one thing I am still not sure about.

A 1995 3.8 block is identical to a 2002 3.8 block correct? INCLUDING the bellhousing bolt pattern... I have no PROOF of this but it makes much sense to me...

SO.. a 2002 A4 transmission SHOULD bolt up to a 1995 A4 right? and a 1995 engine should be able to go into a 2002 car (forget elec. TB right now)...

    I believe Mike huff put a engine from a 96 A4 into his 98 M5.

But, I have a local friend who purchased a 2001 A4 trans for his 1996 A4 camaro. Several shops told him the bellhousings were different.

Can anyone clear this up for me?

I've already bid on This Engine/Trans Combo... and will eventually blow up my current motor and plan to have it replaced.

Ideally, I WOULD like to be able to pick up a spare transmission in the process.

I know that A4's change slightly throughout the years. Things like starter moutn location and such.

Can anyone clarify this for me? Thanks.

From what I've read and heard and so far seen, they all bolt up identically and you should have no issues changing years of the engine besides the obvious intake plenum difference .

The shop you spoke to is mistaken - there is no reason, justification, or GM tech bulletin stating the change of bellhousing design during the years.

(Oh, did you check the tech database? lol )

the biggest thing I would worry about would be sensors and such.. but as far as say.. the shortblock and the heads transmission bell housing.. should be the same.. but what about sensors and connectors on the tranny.. would those have changed.. that's all I would be worried about.

ok, I STRONGLY believe that the bolt pattern on the block never changed.

What does change however is the transmission. The 4L60E goes though several changes a year. Dom and I have gone over this several times already.

Now I would like to find out, what year transmissions are interchangeable. I do believe the sensor connections are different on a 96 and 01 4L60E.

I would like to buy an engine/trans combo and still be able to use the A4 trans in the event mine is not willing to go low 11's with my engine.

So lets see if we can work out the differences in the transmissions between the years.

I put a manual transmission from a 98 into my 96 with no complications. I'm positive that there is no difference, although I don't have that on paper or anything.

The 96 junkyard motor I got was from a manual car. It still had the clutch and flywheel attached to the motor. Everything including electrical fit with no changes/modifications. I know that doesn't really help your questions on the auto but thought I would post.

Manual and auto are probably very different. I'm guessing that auto went through way more changes then manual. Amount of parts in an auto vs manual. When these parts change so have to electronic connections that control them. Bellhousings are removable after 96(including) so they can reuse the trans with different engines. We're trying to figure out when what changed.

Keith we can always remove your trans and compare it to a 01.

I did forget that you're getting that Yank in the fall. So at that time we'll do that. I was thinking about the Ultra Yank though. It's smaller so less drivetrain loss. Don't even bother with girly sub 4400 stall. 4400-6700 is plenty power band. Along with the 232/232 cam, 12s NA next spring.

Well the trans I have in there now has a bell housing that's vastly different then the 01 V6.
