  • Might do engine swap to GN... Need advice

Allright... My engine is being replaced this next weekend. I was just going to get a used 97 3.8 that had 22,000 miles on it for $750 and then kit the TNT nitrous kit and get it all put in. I have about $2500 from the bank (my engine is in the graveyard). I was looking on ebay and found 2 Grand National engines. They come with the wiring hareness and all that good stuff. Can someone take a look at the two links and tell me what they think. Does anyone know if it will match up with the tranny and all fit in. I was thinking if I just get one of the 2 and forget about the nitrous I will have extra money to get the engine in my car. I'm not sure if I will need anything else than what it allready comes with. I need help fast before they end!! Thanks everyone.

dude, you better have a lot more money than that to make those engines work in your car.

they wont fit in your car.

hmm... I know the gn's 3.8 isnt exactly the same as the camaro one but I think it would fit
You may need to fabricate stuff, turbo plumbing, engine mounts??
GN's are nearly god-like cars I would LOVE to see that engine in a camaro(lighter, more areodynamic)
              I would try it..... :D

It will work, but you'll end up with frankencar when you're finished. Way too many parts that weren't designed to work with each other. I hope you're not expecting a bolt out, bolt in kind of job. Given any thought to a tranny?

Have you thought about an LT1??? I know you can get the engine, transmission, computer, all the wireing, and whatever else that is needed for $2000 or maybe a little less if you get lucky. Ebay always has them. I'm not quite sure how much you'll need for other miscellaneous parts. I think you'll need springs, shocks, perhaps a brake conversion for the rear drums. Contact www.hpsalvage.com They'll help you with the conversion, even if you decide to go with the GN motor, which I wouldn't, they should be able to help you with that too. Good luck.

Based on the guy who put one in a 93 bird, its possible, but requires some custom work.
                    • custom motor mounts
non stock turbo to fit in engine bay
                      custom downpipe
                      modified turbo TA manifolds
                      custom misc. piping
                      high flow fuel pump
                      non-electronic transmission(he used TH-700R4)
                      slight movement of abs unit
had a ram air hood (don't know if necessary)
custom piping for intercooler and removal of bumber supports to fit
don't know if A/C was functional
                      lots of tuning

If you go to the GMHTP site you can see pictures of it.

it will fit, those cars & the TT/A came w/200-4r trannies. the TT/A used fwd heads to fit engine bay, yet a 454 will drop in w/no mods needed for the exhaust manifolds, go figure 5 speed.....might need new bellhousing. If that's what you want DO IT!
see what the people @ turbobuick.com are doing, & improve on that.

it can be done. anything is possible. that is true. the guy who installed my power pack has one in his formula. but it is no simple job
6s.......under the hood or under the belt, they just dont cut it.

I researched it so let me tell you what I found
OK you need the engine obviously.
Grand nat has different heads so a TTA motor will fit easier.
                          Computer and wiring harness.
The easiest set up is to install a complete DFI (digital fuel injection) system on it right away.
You would use only certain parts of the stock computer and then dfi takes care of tuning.
                          Look for a 200 4 r
Custom motor mounts will need to be made.
Exhaust will be much larger, well 3 inch, the only part you will need to play with is the manifold to cat portion due to down pipe, dump tube etc.
If you attempt this I would suggest installing a k member in the car. This frees up a lot of lost space so routing the exhaust and turbo pipes would be a bit easier.
                          The rear stays the same.
Big fuel pump, 255 for starters but you might need to go all the way up to 340 lph.

Is it difficult, yeah, would it be worth it, hell yeah!!!!
                          The custom fabrication would involve:
                          motor mounts
                          exhaust
                          turbo set up
                          inter cooler

                          Tuning:
                          DFI all the way

I still want to do this.
I already have a 200 4r. I have a place that is willing to do the swap or attempt a turbo on my series 2 engine (i declined for now)

I would love to have a v6, have the power from a turbo, let peoples jaws drop when they see what is under the hood, and the handling of a new f body

Sorry, I left my sig in it, I took it out though

Not getting int0o details but an obvious expense alot of peopel are sort of looking over. Whetar or not oyu could bolt up a turboed 3.8L motor to a 5-speed you would tear the 5-speed apart. Its a weak tranny, never put on anyhting with over 200 HP. Never on 350s cuz they were weak. You could convert ot osme sor tof auto or maybe build up your t5 but its not cheap.

jsut an obviouso problem you will run into.
