  • Ack! need a little help.

hmm, I adjusted my rockers(where the ticking was centralized, that one was pretty loose). The car sat with a garbage bag over the motor for about 3-4 days, today I patch it all back together, but when I start it and run it the car makes a load hissing noise whirring noise, no tikcing or bangs, (Best way to explain the sound is a kind of like a supercharger). and the RPMs were jumpoing all over the place. then they slowly started to equal out at around 2k RPMs.
Oil pressure is ok, jsut a little high, but about right for engine RPms

Car feels as before same if not better under WOT, and the sound diminishies almost goes away under WOT.

All vacuum lines appear to be in place.

I gave up tonight, its 4AM and exhaust at 2k rpms, and loud whirring noise might piss off hte neighbors.

    Any ideas?

    I jsut had 2 thoughts.

Would over tightened rockers do cause this(even though I was careful)

Even better yet, what baout a leak, in either the throttlebody gasket, or the upper intake pelnum to the intake manifold? Maybe even where the EGR connects to the upper intake plenum?

    It could explain whirring noise.

well if you removed the intake (which I am guessing you had to do to properly adjust the rocker) and reused the old gaskets yes that is more than likely the problem. if that's not it wait till you have plenty of light and some rest and look for a vaccum leak. I'd be willing to be that is the problem because those lines become hard and brittle over time and they crack very easily..

yep I did, I used a new gasket, but maybe it did not seat properly, I'll try tightening the bolts a litle more to see if it helps.

Yeah I'd check the seal first thing. Did this hissing noise start Immediately? or was it after a few minutes? Did it get a bit worse as time went on? Maybe throw some RTV sealant and re-torque the upper intake and valve covers. Does the hissing get louder with higher RPM's? That might be the EGR then. But wait a sec... if it was the EGR then wouldn't your O2 sensors throw off the Service Engine light? Maybe it is upper intake related.

(if it is then you can bet how much MORE anxious I will be when I have to remove it for header installation... I'll probably spend like 4 hours on that little thing if it's that much of a pain in the *** part... I'm already starting to drip some liquid wrench on all the bolts I can get at)

forgot there is a definite SES light going off. What part of the EGR would cause that? Jsut the part that connects to the upper intake plenum?

ack!! I'll go retorque some bolts.

you guys think anything else but a leak would cause this?

Doh over torqued a bolt, found one at home depot.

all problewms gone, car running a hell of alot smoother and stronger then before. jsut the battery won't hold charge, maybe the 1 week downtime was what finally killed it its like 3 years old and a pretty crappy battery in florida heat.
