  • Does anyone know how the 99+ throttle by wire system works?

I'm looking at buying a motor/tranny out of a 2001 3.8 and I have a 98 now. Can anyone tell me what I would need to make the throttle by wire system correctly function? I assume something needs to be attached to the gas pedal in place of the throttle cable, but I have no idea what.

I dunno if this is "advanced" enough tech, but I'll let Magnus decide on that one =)

I haven't seen what's under the pedal, but whatever it is, you would need it. You would also need the matching wiring harness for the engine, since it will have the wires going to the little electric motor on the side of the throttle body, and your existing harness won't. Also will need the matching pcm, since your pcm won't know how to operate the tb motor.

(or just put your old intake and tb back on the new motor, and leave your harness, pcm, pedal, etc intact)

Switching intakes is not an option, I want the straight throttle body. I will be getting the wiring and PCM that go with the new motor. My biggest issue is wondering what actually senses the pedal movement.

You would be best off to use your current throttle body. I think it would be a pain to try and reverse engineer the drive by wire setup. Your upper intake manifold is curved, not your TB!!!!!! Just unbolt the TB from the manifold and install it on the new engine. You may need to adjust your throttle cable.

You neeed the pedal assembly, body control module, PCM, and the associated pigtails and harnesses. More trouble that its worth I think.

95-98 TB's have a different bolt pattern than the 99-02's.
