So I need to replace a lifter. I have basic knowledge(learning everyday from you all thanks) and a chiltons manual. Is this something a novice could handle? i hopr this belongs here...

Replacing a lifter is definatley something you can do yourself, but it takes a little bit of knowhow and a whole lot of cussin', especially with the engine stuffed underneath the dashboard. Read what the chilton's says about doing it, and see if it's something you think you can do.

BTW:This probably goes in "Drivetrain" Don't worry, they will move it for you.

if you have small hands, a lot of patience, and the right tools, do it yourself. If you wanna go on the safe side, have someone else do it who knows what they're doing. while you're at it, get a higher ratio lifter kit for more hp.

just replace the bad lifer you can get away with that with a roller cam (if ya had a 3.4 you would have to replace all the lifters and the cam becase flat tappet lifter wear to the cam)
i've heard of higher ratio rocker arms(i don't know where to get them for a 3.8 tho..) but i've never heard of higer ratio lifters

I don't think there is such a thing as higher ratio lifters, I bet he meant rocker arms. If you are going to replace one lifter, you should probably replace them all. You can test them once you take them out though, should be able to figure out which one is sticking.

How do you test them? We dont want to replace all of them if we dont have to. There $42 a piece. If we can just replace the lifter that is sticking it should be fine. $500 for lifters dont sound like too much fun. How do you test the lifters once there out?

test hydraulic lifters with leak-down test.

if you plan on changing rocker arm ratio, i'd suggest using a little stronger valve springs as well.
