  • My engine pulls straight to 6k without a cough... is this normal?

I've been hearing figures of upwards of 4500-5000 as being the top of the 3.8L's powerband... but my car keeps pulling hard straight to 6k where it stops dead at the limiter... I was wondering if this is typical of a well breathing engine or not? I don't know of any internal work on my engine... I just wonder if maybe something isn't stock... I always assume it's stock but have no dyno around to prove or disprove.

I plan to get a good cam this summer... just want to make sure I'm improving things... I suppose I should get a G-tech or find a dragstrip...

an intake/exhaust 3.8 should pull to 6K no problem.

Yep, 4600 is where we fall on our face. Better heads/cam should fix it.

The 5spds typically pull better to the revlimit. Mine definetly does.

1998 bone stock intake/exhaust, 5spd pulls hard right to about 57,5,800 but I am shifting before I get to 6.

mine pulls stragith to 5900 in first and second.. and i have moved my rev limiter up with the hypertech my question is when i go above 6k why does my engine just kinda sputter?

That sputtering is because you basically fell off the torque curve... Only time I've had that happen is in my dad's '83 Rx7... you hit 6k RPM where the torque and Hp peak and all of a sudden it wusses out... by 6,5k it seems like there is no pull... so it's best to shift before that point... I guess then There is probably nothing internal... that don't bother me though, it was cool cuz my friend was in the car and he said "just stop here and floor it, I want to see what you got" So I just got on it and I smacked into the rev limiter before I knew it and I shifted to second.

Man I'm drooling over this summer when I put in my cam...
