  • Good news from Carputing

I e-mailed them asking about the chance of L36edit coming out for us. I also pointed out the growing aftermarket demand for tuning on our cars. Well, I got a VERY quick reply! Here it is:

    "Hi,
We are working on the L36 engines (as well as the L67 and LA1
engines). We will start on the 99 and up models. Right now our
priorities are to finish up the 03/04 trucks (getting close) and then do
these. We have the PCM's, and are working to find all the tables in them.

    Thanks,
    Dave @ carputing.com"

Whats the deal with that 99+ stuff anyway? I thought our PCM's were reasonably identical, and with what few changes their was, the 98's & below would be easier without the electronic throttle.

Thats okay though, hopefully Magnus will pull a miracle out of his bag-o-goodies and show everyone a thing or two...

99+ added drive by wire which apparently caused quite a few changes.

He e-mailed me once more adding that it will likely be this summer (2004) when it is released, but could easily be sooner! This will be like waiting for Santa Clause to come :D

This is great news. It is like hypertech x 1000. Does this do the scanning like the auto-tap as well?

I'm not very familiar with how something like autotap works, but my question is this: Does autotap, hypertech and what not automatically tune your car? What if a car was heavily modded (i.e. heads, forged internals, bigger injectors, ect) would this automatically adjust things right? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

autotap just monitors what you computer is doing, it tells you O2 readings, L&S trims, engine temp, intake air temp and many many more things, L36 wont have anything to monitor the computer, its just a tuning device...Hypertech is nothing like autotap and is way behind what L36 will be as far as tuning goes...

                      why is it BS?

How is the market there for pre 99's?

97 and 98's are drastically different, it would take the same amount of time to do the 97 alone than it would for the 99-02's.

If companies charged what was fair for a 97 (with premium), you would complain that the premium is BS.

From what I learned in my experience spending a day with Ed Wright, was that the only 3.8 PCMs that are identical is 00+. 96,97,98 & 99, are all slightly different in code and such. That is why there are no handheld tuners for 96-99. Most companies didn't see much gain from tuning them and said screw it and dropped the program.

And to asnwer the question of will this program automatically "fix" the tune on your car...NO. It will be a program that takes alot of time to get used to, and is very intricate as far as what all can be done to the car. You can easily damage a car with it if you do not know what you are doing. I can't wait for it to be here!!!

so if what 96v6bird was saying, that 99's are different then 00+, will this work?

im not even gonna ask you magnus, i already know your answer ;)

it is my understanding that each software package for each year would have to be different. would take a lot of work for each year. it took ed like a month and ahalf to write the program/decipher the codes in order to program my ecm
