I can either pay about $1800 to have the dealer replace it or I can park it for a few days and tackle this with my husband. I'm leaning more towards doing this ourselves.
My question is, are there any brands that are better than most? How much do gaskets cost? What else should I replace or look into while I'm replacing the gaskets? Any special tools I might need?
its a pretty involved proccess. im doing a head gasket swap on a mustang GT right now. first off you have to disconnect all wiring in the way, next take off intake, TB, egr, O2 sensors, headers/exhaust manifolds/ valve covers, upper and lower intake, ac and power steering pump, altenator, rockers, pushrods, head bolts, finally heads and then change the gaskets and put it all backtogether.
Things that have to be changed: head gaskets, head bolts, valve cover gaskets, header bolts and gaskets should be changed. thats all i can think of also change anything that looks in bad shape.
O2 sensors don't have to be touched. Only have to remove the bolt that connects EGR to the upper intake. TB can stay connected to upper intake manifold. A/C and power steering pump don't have to be touched.
Depending on which side you're working on, you'll have to drain coolant, remove electrical connecters, alternator, fuel rail, upper intake, lower intake, valve cover, rockers, pushrods, exhaust manifold.
Its pretty straight forward, If you know how to use a ratchet and a tork-wrench. Then the only thing else to deal with is the time involved.
You should take the time to fix it yourself. At least you know if any corners where cut(every shop, no matter how good they are, will do a half-*** job)...words of wisdom!
