• may get GTP internals..

how much will it cost me to get a set of GTP forged pistons/rods?

instead of going for the ls1 (insurance wants wayyy too much) im gonna go ahead and build up my 3.8. since i heard the news about the procharger kit from batmans post..

how much would it cost for the gtp pistons and rods... would i be able to put them in myself?

Check around on ClubGP.com, sometimes you can find guys selling stuff like that.

I researched this a while back, around 800-900 bucks from GM for pistons, rods, bearings, and rings.

Find a local machine shop to give you a quote on a rebuild, which is basicly what you will have to pay for in order to run new internals.

IMHO I would go with a custom piston, GTP ones will put you at 8:1 comp ratio, those ATI blowers run better with 9:1 since they are intercooled.

alright.. so about 15psi would be safe on 9;1 compression?

I'm sure Ironman or someone a little more knowledgable can answer this a little better than I can, but, 15psi sounds REALLY high. I may be wrong. I would think more along the lines of 10-12psi SAFELY.

well i just want to kno my limits as far as boost would be with the compression ratio. im not saying i would actually go that crazy on the boost. but if im ever at the track, and want to push it up.. i'll be able to do it and not worry.

i'd most likely have average of 10-12 psi

this yr i'm buying a spare motor and i'm going to put those intense 8:4:1 pistons in and run 20psi of boost.. well that's the plan anyway//

GTPs run 8.5:1 last I checked using forged dished pistons.

We use the same rod length as a small block chevy, does anyone think it might be possible to use SBC rods (forged Lunati or something)?

12PSI Intercooled on 9.5:1 CR is doable, anymore and you need less CR I believe to see the benefits without knock on 93 octane. I might be wrong but I wouldn't want to run more than that. When you calculate the effective dynamic CR when you're talking about 1.8atm of pressure, you're getting into the realm of the unknown for these engines Its all trial and error after 9PSI guys - use common sense.

Even with 9.4:1 CR you can run up to 14psi(IC'd) AS LONG AS you can remove KR from the picture. The AFR and Igntion tables will be the biggest challenge...on the other hand with a 8.5:1 CR then over 15 psi (IC'd) is no problem...like I said as long as you can remove KR from the picture...BTW more compression from FI is easier to curtail with 8.5:1 pistons...now you will have to do some other mods to be able to use this untaural pressure much more efficiently eg cams and headwork...the problem I forsee is with the SC belt, you will have to find a belt wide enough to spin and hold "it own" for 15psi+ also no telling how the tranny will hold but it is safe to say if we FWD guys are going 12's with the stock tranny config then RWD should do better...

how about nitrous on GTP pistons? How would that hold?

im no nitrous junky. but you'd want to go with higher compression for nitrous.

The GTP has ~.100 shorter rods than the L36, they are stronger but who cares? No one ever damages stock rods in the L36 because we don't make enough power.

The pistons in a GTP ARE NOT forged. you can get forged from INTENSE-RACING.com but they are not cheap. The stock GTP pistons are coated and the L36's are not but that's about it.

The GTP pistons set you at 8.5:1 and the L36 is at 9.4:1, in our boosted L36's we have no problems doing ~10 pounds with the stock L36 internals. We have gone to 15 with 104 octane as well with very good results.

Chevy rods will not work. They are .950 wide at journal and L36 rods are .850

Hope this helps clear up any misconceptions...
