  • 97 3.8----> 89 TPI (possible???) Bad idea??

    I was thining of switching out my 3.8 motor with a 89 Vette motor and a 700R4(if i have to). Has anyone attempted this before or is this alittle off the wall. The vette motor has just been replaced and i hate to just let it sit there. What woudl i all need??? What could i do for a wiring harness and guages? I realize this is probably a dumb, difficult question but its just an idea..any help is appreciated. thanks

          I normally hate it when someone does this but... why put the money into a 245 hp motor?

          It is your money so more power to ya, I guess it would be neat to see! But you would be better looking at the LS1 for a V8.

            I'm pretty sure he's looking into the 50 billion boltons available out there that will let it make signifacantly more than 245hp

              You will have problems being the TPI motor is OBD1 and yours is OBD2, if you have to you will not pass emissions.

                depends on how they dothe test. IF it's just the OBD II plug & go, then your screwed.

                  well this motor was running in the high 13s in the vette..I think it would be cheaper than modding my V6...and there ARE a ton of bolt ons...the motor that replaced this hits high 11s N/A and can easily run on the street (total bill was less than $5,000)...more or less I was wondering if I could use it cuz i have it and its costly to get an LT1 or LS1..no emission checks around here

                    Usually people put new motors in old cars, not old motors in new cars.

                      well man the biggest problem you will likely have is firewall clearance issues and issues with that distributor being in the back of the motor, it's going to wind up coming from under the windshield. As far as odb1 vs odb2 I'd just get a standalone accel PCM for the L98. if you can overcome the hood clearance issues, and maybe start off with a LS1 crossmember and modify it you could proably make the whole thing work, just gonna need some custom motor mounts and proably quite a bit of custom fab, with a cutting torch, welder and big *** hammer. I think it's one of those, with enough time and money you can do anything kinda problems.

                        You can get by the distribuor issue by using a crap top distributor, or another lower clearance alternative. Personally if I was going to go through the trouble of swaping in a V8 I'd go ahead and get an LS-1 or and LT-1.
