  • 1.7 Rocker arm bolt failure

Well, it's been a nice week driving my car around with the new Comp Cams Pro Magnum 1.7 Roller Rockers. Leaving class today, everything was fine. Car felt great, made no noises or anything. Then as I'm getting on the interstate I notice a rocker arm clattering pretty loud. Get home and this is what I find:

    http://www.leadingedgesim.com/mkapro...ockerBolt2.jpg

The head of the bolt popped right off the shaft. You can see the head in the last pic. Thank god it didn't go any further into the motor.

All the bolts were torqued to spec (25 ft*lbs according to the instructions from ZZP, and confirmed with Zooomer before the install), and all the others are still tight.

Does anyone have a clue what the hell happened?

Looks like a casting failure with the bolt. Even reputable companies like comp screw up sometimes.

Call zoomer, rip his ***, get another one for free.

Inspect the hell out of that cylinder head to make sure there is no metal debris floating around in the oil. THere will be nothing worse than fodding out an engine and spinning a bearing because of negligence.

I don't know about that. When I was first installing them, I was stupid and accidently messed up a different bolt. I talked to him and he sent me a replacement. After waiting for a week I gave up and had him send me one via Next Day delivery, but I had to pay $25. 3 weeks after he says he sent the original replacement, I've yet to receive it. Maybe it did get lost in the mail or something, but my patience with these damn rockers is gone. I'm not really complaining about having to pay for the shipping...it sucks, but it was my fault so that's fair enough. What annoys me is that I never got the original bolt. I honestly don't know if he ever really sent it.

Ok, I just heard from Zooomer. I'm gonna send the rockers back for a refund until they get Grade 8 bolts (instead of the current Grade 5).

maybe use a telescoping magnet through the spark plug hole to fish out ant metal debris in the cylinders on that side of the engine. fish around in the head while the valve cover is off as well.

          bummer.

Change the oil when you put the car back together, then change again after a few hundred miles. That should take care of anything that got into the engine.

Would you be able to just buy some grade 8 bolts from the hardware store, and possibly even have zoomer just refund you the cost of the bolts? It wouldnt be more than like $15-20 for 12 grade 8 bolts. That'd save you the time of reinstalling the old rockers, and then doing the same process all over again in a few months. I'd imagine they use a standard threading and size you could pick up from home depot or something.

They're not standard bolts. Probably specially made or something.

The car is now running with the stockers back on. I miss the rockers, but I'll be glad to get rid of the constant trouble they've brought.

Glad the car is running and seems OK. Hope you get the 1.7s back in, that should be a nice little gain.

Get up, put on your clothes and shoes, get in a car that runs, and go to look around. I'll almost bet there will be a bolt store somewhere close to you that has exactly what you need.

I'd bet most performance shops around you would have grade 8 bolts. Good luck, sorry to here bout this.

hmmmm? That's usually the end result of over torque, but they were torqued specifically ??? Probably a bad lot, but then again grade 8 sounds better than 5. Good luck to ya
