• V6 Rebuild, best Cam still not found

i'm going to rebuild my engine next month. i was thinking V8 power but too much money for me know .

i did a search and found
206/212 .512/.520 113 by magnus
210/220 .535/.547 113 by slacker69

i'm thinking to get the best power/no SES for a N/A Engine, but i live in california and i was concern about emissions. would i pass emissions with any of this cams?? Also what about the infamous SES light??

Also i found wiseco does good pistons for a good price. any recomendation on this pistons ??

my mechanic was talking to increase the compression a little. what would be the maximum i can go with a maximum of 91 octanes.

i think everything else would be stock but cam and pistons.

what do you guys think

thanks

I think most people will tell you that for an NA cam you don't want to favor exhaust that much if at all. You may want to try one with equal intake and exhaust durations.

Also, take a gander at this thread.

You have a lot of options, and all are way better than stock. Checkout comp's new line of cams designed for our engines, they're quite good looking to me. Most people find them small but thats because they don't know how powerful the 200/206 grind can be I wouldn't run smaller than that though.

emissions is based on overlap. more overlap means more of a chance to fail emissions. NA cars like mroe overlap tho, so they can breathe better at higher rpm's. www.zzperformance has a "VS" comp cam that is for the GTP motors, but it will work on our motors as well. I think this cam would be able to pass cali emissions, but I dunno for sure. Personally, I'd find a guy ur cool w/ to do the "test" and have him just pass u no matter what, maybe slip him some extra cash or sumthin.

thanks guys.

i was checking at those new cams from compcams. i'll give it a try

200/206 .496/.480 112

also i looked at http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/pro...ion_vs_cam.htm

206/216 .504/.504 115

i was reading about those 115 and i thought it was better for supercharged engines. also i like the part when they said:

"The Competition cams VS cam was designed for use with totally stock heads. Stock springs, keepers, retainer, lifters and pushrods are recommended."

i guess less money out of my pocket

so what do you guys think out of this two's.

as soon as i got any one of this cams installed
i can probably have my car to the dyno to see the numbers. i can not run a "before" because the engine is messed up, but as soon as i got her back from the garage shop, i'll let you guys know.
i'm saving the money now so i think by the end of may i can go and get her fixed.

thanks all of you guys

From what I've heard though, all the emissions testing places for 96+ cars are going to just plug a cable into your OBDII socket and see if the computer is reporting anything wrong with the cat or anything like that. So as long as you have 02 simms and what not, you could pass emissions without a cat! They may do a visual inspection, but I have no idea.

In california my car was dyno'd at both 25mph and 50mph to determine emissions.

As long as your total valve overlap isnt too insane, it will pass with flying colors. This is one reason Im not going with a super aggressive cam.

In new jersey, they dyno for emmissions as well. I know this isnt too much of a help, but I thought maybe somebody would like to know.

The VS cam has more lift and duration, but also more lobe separation than the ohter 1 u picked. I think the 2 will make the same hp numbers, but the VS cam will bet better because of the overall driveablility of it. the car will sounds like a sleeper, but move well, and still pass smog probably.

so the vs cam would be the best overall performer???
anybody else
thanks guys

99redcamaro i'm runnig the "vs" cam right now and i've had good results with it.. it put me into the 12's. i have to say if your going for n/a only DO NOT get this cam.. but if oyu going to hit the forced induction route, then this is a good cam..

mine vs cam is coming out the car very soon, if you want it, i'll let it go for 275 shipped...it has 4000 miles on it...

i don't think i'm going with forced induction. at least not yet. so that would let me with the new 200/206 from compcams.
i think i'm going to be the first trying this one. anyone using this cam ??
i'm going to talk with my mechanic to see what does he think of this.
as i said as soon as i got her out of the shop i'll post results

thanks guys

I'm from Riverside Calif. I'm interested in seeing how your cam works on your car. Are you going to try and have it smog tested of the sake of it. Cause I want to know how slim it would be in passing. I do hope you go for the VS because that's the one I'm interested in. It would be a good cam if you do go for poweradders like SC and N2O.

Please post again when your car is done.
