• Swapping in a 3.8L and auto trans

Yup, I'm tired of my LS1 and want to swap the engine for a 3.8L.

    Just kidding :D .

I actually want to swap it in my 1984 Firebird. The 2.8L in there needs gaskets and crap and has a lot of miles, so I hate to spend the money to rebuild that. However, I found a 1998 3.8L cheap with auto transmission. I'm checking with the guy to make sure it includes all the wiring and stuff. Is this swap possible/easy though? Could my old 5spd bolt up to the 3.8L or am I just better putting in the auto trans? Has anyone done this or knows what it would take custom wise? I need a daily driver and this car would be perfect .

Well you can get a manual trans 3.8L combo for under $700, and the swap should work out really well. Just get all the wiring harnesses and a good PCM, I recommend a 2000+ model if you can find one. You might need to fabricate motor mounts though, and who knows how the K member will react.

Why not drop a 350 in it instead?

Well, the 3.8L combo is a really great price. Plus I already have my fast V8 car. I do need a daily driver though and this would be a great car to do that in. The 3.8L is a wonderful engine, pretty dang peppy and great gas mileage which would work out perfect.

3.4 would be easier, same block so you can keep your old trans/mounts.

If you are good at fabbing stuff, then go for it.
