  • MSD DIS 4 and MSD coil packs going in monday

spending 660 for install of the DIS 4 and coil packs. I'm hoping for more power and better mileage with these. I'm hoping 10 rwhp from both, and 3-5 mpg, based on my current mods. I also bought ZZP electric water pump, TB spacer, and 160* thermostat last night. I dunno when those will go in, but I hope to see a small mileage gain from the electric water pump, as well as a decent hp gain from the cooler tb, cooler engine, and less pasasitic loss from the pump. At least 10 rwhp gain from only the pump at max rpm, and prolly another 5 rwhp from the tb spacer and thermostat. also, i hope for maybe 1 mpg gain.

why am i doing this? well, the ignition because I've done moderate intake work, and will be putting in a 3" cat to match my 3" cat-back in a while, and I want all of my mixture to be burned to make max power with what I've got. also, gas prices suck in california at 2.50 per gallon of regular unleaded, and any mileage gain will help. the WP, tb spacer, and thermostat are to help keep temps down, since more air & fuel in will cause more heat, puting more pressure on the cooling system, and I won't mind the 10 rwhp gain at 6000 rpm for highway racing.

Dude... $660 just for install? :(
If you want some help I can take pics of where I mounted mine, its is EASY to do... and there are many diagrams for wiring...
Did you also get the Coil Interface Units or does the 3.8L not require them?

Seriously, if you want to save $660 I will help in any way I can.. my dad and I installed mine in the driveway one afternoon.

oh no, it's 660 for the dis-4, coil packs, and labor. 180 for labor alone, and the rest for the parts. I'm assuming he's getting the coil induction units along with it.

That is a really good price them.
          DIS-4 = $330
          Coils = $150
          Coil Interface Units = $90 (I think)

You may want to do more research before you buy the DIS 4. It is the general consensus that it is worthless for a N/A 3.8 as they already have a strong ignition system.

Although the 3.4's benefit a lot from them.

yea really, i was dead set on gettin the DIS4 for my car, but every single person, and i mean EVERY one, that got it for their 3.8 said it was useless, and there was no gain.

I'm looking at the results posted in the reviews section. the gains in a stock 3.8 were .2 in the 1/4 and 2 mpg. I don't expect a .2 gain the in 1/4, but obviously to get a .2 gain on a stock car, something had to be added, perhaps a more accurate air/fuel ratio since all the air/fuel was being completely ignited, perhaps more power, I don't know. I know that gas sucks out here, and if a stock car can gain 2 mpg from it, I should be able to gain at least 2 mpg or more because of the fact that I am getting more air and fuel in and out of the motor. has anyone actually dyno'd before and after gains, losses, or same power levels?

BTW, i'm being charged 350 for the dis-4, 120 for the coils, and 180 for the install, just to clear up any confusion, plus 7.75% tax on it.

I tested it myself.. VERY IN-DEPTH.. it was worth .0 on the 3.8

Sell it to a 3.4 owner, it helps the 3.4 owners, not the 3.8.

I gaurantee you if you install it on a 3.8 you will have a very expensive weight to carry down the 1/4 that doesn't add anything for performance.

We alrady have waste spark ignition systems.

Stock coils are good as well.

I would really keep the stock coils and such.. just get plugs/wires.

sell it! trust me. take my advice.

3.4 owners can gain from the MSD though so you may be able to sell it to one of htem. I'd save the coils as backups. The stock coils are very strong.

also, you paid 150 for a water pump installed?

like, not crapping on you here, but i bought a brand new Bosch water pump for $33, and install on it took about 30 min and 8 bolts. it was so simple. if you have the ability to turn a ratchet, you can change a water pump.

the zzp water pump, 160* thermostat, and tb spacer are not being installed yet. i just ordered them from zzp thursday night and haven't arrived yet.

I dunno if I will do it myself or not, i might just have one of my mechanics do it along w/ the tb spacer and 160* thermo.
