  • Tick Tick Tick Tick help?

    Alright, so my problem is getting worse.
    Its ticking more, and bogging a lot throughout the driving range.
    We hooked on a snap-on computer to the ecm and all the sensors are fine.
    New fuel pump and filter.

    Alright so I got this tick, which my uncle said is either a pushrod or rocker arm.
    Heres what it does. it will tick a bit at idle but if you hold it at 2000rpm it will sound like this.
    Nothing,nothing, tickticktick, nothing,nothing and it loops like that.
    What do you guys think? This could be what is causing my bogging right?
    We used a stethescope (sp) and its coming from the front of the passenger valve cover.
    He said that this would cause power loss and bogging. He said that they could just be loose and need to be tightened.

    And If I do rebuild the top end what all can I replace by JUST removing the valve cover?

    Sounds like what mine was doing. Took it all apart. Heads were good, as were the valves, pushrods, lifters, rockers.

    The only thing I have left to check would be the timing chain, and I doubt the timing chain would affect only one cylinder. Should make the whole engine run rough.

      Ticking is typically associated with the valve train (lifter, rocker, pushrod, springs) and usually indicates something is loose, bent, broken, or in the case of a lifter, collapsed. Any valve train problem could cause power loss. If you have isolated the noise to a particular bank, you can remove that valve cover and further isolate it with your scope (it won't hurt to run the engine - run, not drive - without the valve cover - it will just be a little messy). Once you have isolated the problem, you can address it. It may be as simple as adjusting/tightening, but you won't know until you find the problem.

      As far as rebuilding the top end, there isn't a lot that can be done by just removing a valve cover. Pushrods, rockers, valve springs and retainers, and not a lot else.

        I forget where I read this but A very a person who seemed very knowledgable about cars said our fuel injectors tick fairly loudly. Maybe it's that?

          With 235k on that engine I would venture to say its probably a rod knock.

          But it would be worth your time to pull the passanger valve cover and check for collapsed lifters or bent push rods. Just buy new rocker bolts, they are one time use only.

          Have you run any injector cleaner through lately? The injectors are suppose to tick a little. I guess its possible a few are a bit dirty.

            I would flush the motor, sometimes gunked up lifters will make some noise. Jsut use some do it at home stuff, its relatively cheap.

            Try that once or twice(since oyu have so many miles).

            If it still does it may want ot remove the valve covers, loosen all the rockers, then tighten them down in sequence(there is a specific way to do it, you have to crank the motor to top deand center and go from there not just tighten them)

            That fixed my valve tick I had at 110k I know have nearly 130k no problems.

            Another thing to think of is a small exhasut leak can sound like a ticking noise.

              I got the bogging problem fixed. (Plugwires)
              But the ticking is still there.
              It isnt exhaust leak.
              It isnt a solid tick.
              If i hold the rpms at say 2k it will sound like this:
              No Tick (1 sec~), TICKTICKTICK (real quick)

              and it goes in a sequence like that.

                Its weird that i saw this post.... my motor, a 3.4 though, just started doing the same thing about 2 days ago.... its not like rod knock.... but it is..... it almost sounds like rod knock but it is off and on like no tick....tick tick tick...no tick... it is very odd. If anyone has a clue please inform me.. as for now i am heading towards rod knock.. but only one of them is knocking??. who knows im lost but i guess its time to pull the motor and find out whats gone wrong.

                  i had a 3.4 with 115K on it with the same noise. Found out they have a problem with blowing out the EGR gasket but that would be constant and left rear of the engine compartment as you face the engine. It's worth a check and an easy fix.

                    The noise is on the opposite side of the EGR Valve.
