    Building a megasquirt EFI controller

    Since I have a turbo and there's no easy way to tune my car for it I decided to go with the do-it-yourself Megasquirt EFI controller: http://www.megasquirt.info/
    It should meet just about all my needs. It doesn't have spark control so I'll let the stock computer handel that, it's doing fine so far...fuel has been the issue. Best of all it's cheap! cheap! cheap! since you have to build it yourself and figure out all the tuning issues.
    I just finished building it last night and it works using the tester that I built from a kit as well. So now I just need to wire it up to my car and tune away! It'll be awesome to be able to control more fuel with pulse widths rather than a FMU...

    I read a lot about it and i´m pretty curious how it turns out! The only downside i see is that it only does batch injection and no sequential, but efficiency doesn´t matter that much ;)
    Did you order all stuff from them or get it from different stores? How much was it?

      Yea, I'm not too worried about it being batch. Batch vs. seq doesn't make much diff in higher RPMs anyway and the way it is now I'm way too rich at idle cuz of my big injectors so I think it'll make up for it.

      These kits are awesome. Each simular part comes in a seperate bag and is labeled exactly what it is and corresponds to the instructions. Also it comes with the case with end plates that are already machined for connectors and such.
      The actual megasquirt kit was $140 and the Stimulator(board used to test the controller off of the car) was $40.

        Thanks a lot for the link, i´ll get a kit there soon, too! He even will send that stuff to germany [img]smile.gif[/img]
        Please post or mail me your experiences from installing it on the car when you´re done!
        What size of injectors will you run?
        And as far as i understand you can´t use the stock IAC valve (MS can´t handle stepping valves), how do you plan to solve this?

          Well I got it all wired up to my car yesterday and got it started last night at about 2am(there were a lot of wires!). However, the 1st time I turned the key it started right up in less than a second! The engine even revved. It was pretty cool.
          As far as the stepper motor, I'm not using their little fast idle solenoid and I'm going to let the stock computer keep controlling the stepper motor IAC. Since it's still getting all the same input as it was before it should still be able to adjust it accordingly.

                Did you tap into the wires for the TPS and the IAT, so the stock pcm has still all sensor data for adjusting the ignition, and will this work? (i wasn´t sure, for example if both try to measure the resistance of the TPS etc, because voltage values get mixed up or whatever. Perhaps i just think to much ;) )

                  yes the pcm still has all sensor data. It just has no input into controlling the injectors.

                    I doubled up on both IAT and coolant temp sensors so each computer could have their own. I looked through all of the data on our ignition systems in my factory service manuals and couldn't find any documentation that says the PCM uses the TPS signal for timing calculation. From my understanding of EFI the TPS is used for measuring when you're accelerating(measures a rate of change of throttle opening) and enriches the mixture to compensate. Just like the accel circuit on a carb. So because of this I just unplugged the stock PCM from the TPS and plugged it into the megasquirt.
                    You could share the TPS with both computers, basically you'd just splice into the ground and the signal wire but leave off the 5v reference to the megasquirt. I wanted things to look neater so I just unplugged the stock PCM from it all together.

                      Oh, and I'm using 24# injectors. I'm going to need to go bigger if I plan on running much boost. For now I have the pressure turned up which makes them roughly 26#-27# I'm going to go with 36# and see how that works out.

                        Well I got the car driving around last night and drove it to work this morning. I still have some tuning to do(which is difficult without a WB O2 sensor) but I think I can get it better than what it was before...

                          Did you see the Precision Wideband Controller that the MegaSquirt guys will offer soon? Looks promising for tuning, perhaps you can even connect it to the MS. The only thing i worry about is the "simple" calibrating of the wideband sensor...

                            Yea, I've seen that. I'd like to use it once it comes out. The calibration could be pretty hard but I've heard that some people will offer an already calibrated one...who knows how much that'll cost though.
                            Well I've been driving my car around. It's doing well. I still have some fine tuning to do but I'm happy with it now. [img]graemlins/naughty.gif[/img]

                              Sorry for firing so many questions on you ;)
                              Do you run / are you going to run a FMU and MS (is this hard to tune?) or just bigger injectors with MS?
