  • Wideband O2 sensors

    I'm wondering when we should change the stock, supposedly narrow band O2 sensors on our cars? I say supposedly because I read up on Bosch in a car mag and it said that they, in 1998, came out w/ the newest version of the O2 sensor capable of reading wideband air/fuel ratio's. This allowed more tuning ability in newer cars because of the design, cat light-off only takes 10 seconds after the ignition is turned on. If we don't have this on our cars, and it is not wide-band, then can we just swap on a wideband senor and will the computer be able to understand the voltages it sends to it? I'm looking into getting the AEM air/fuel meter w/ wideband O2 sensor in the future, unless I need a new one now, since my car get's ****ty gas mileage and that could be it.

    NO NO NO...

    1) you cannot plug a wideband sensor directly into a narroband connection.. the voltages and signals are verrrry different.. so thats jsut out of the question..

    2) you car get ****ty milage becuase its not tuned and you have alot of mods.. and it probably has error codes.. and if you are really lucky its becuase the engine is dumping fuel to "cool" the cat..

    I have hte AEM unit in my possition right now..
    if you are motovated and are convertable hacking wires and soldering.. the units offers a simulated narrow band output signal.. its shows how to hook it up in the instructions.. IMo i wouldent use it.. there is no good reason to.. and it would be a PITA.. replasing the rear is pointless.. otherwise you have 2 sensors on the headers.. ... do you plan to get two AEM units?? i dont see the point unless your car is gunna make 8000000 hp..

    it also will output a digital signal that can be logged via MS hypertermanal..

    however IMO.. get your wideband setup.. a o2 sim, then tune it.. see how it runs.. that shuld solve alllllll of your issues.. I doubt your sensors are bad.. there are routines that the pcm does to cehck for bad sensors, sutch as signal strengh.. not to mention your car is way too new.. unless you are spraying ALOT or using alternative fuel there is no reason for them to go bad..

      There is no SES lights being thrown, so I doubt ne error codes are happening. why would the motor dump fuel to cool off the cat?

        Artic Wolf you have mods, but not exactly ones that should give you bad mileage. Do you drive like a maniac?
        You have an intake, exhaust, OK -- standard. Should give you better mileage.
        Gears / TC might take away from that. But your mileage shouldn't be bad, especially if it's only 4 years old as a 2001. Something could be wrong with your DIS-4 / coils ... what kind of miles do you get?

          still haven't gotten the msd and coils in yet. i get about 17 mpg. i drive 80-110 on the freeway and between 35-45 in the city.

            On the subject of rear o2 sensors, can anyone hook me up with a pic of where they connect to the wiring harness?

            the 3.8L and wiring harness i bought did not include rear o2 sensors, and I'm kind of wondering where they would hook up, and if they are the same type of sensor as the front sensors on my exhaust manifolds.

            Also, would i have any problem just running the front sensors and putting simulators in the rear?
