• supercharge v6 or swap ls1

was to all, I got a 98 3800 a4 with no work dun to it. my concern is, is it worth it to supercharge my v6 Instead of swapping it for an ls1?
m trying to factor in cost, hp+, maint. , durability.
Please commet and dont be byest
This baby\'s the envy of F-body owners across(jK), but the Pearly sunset paint with white leather and the 18\" crager rims tell the story. not much for motor mods other than a flowmaster muffler, Ram air intake and hood but im always down to here about super/turbo chargers!

It would cost more to get the LS1 I'd say, but you'd definately get more HP out of it. I'd say if you have the money it would be better to probably go with the LS1 but thats just me.

If you do the work yourself it will cost about the same I think... maybe a PINCH more for the LS1.. $3500 complete for LS1 stuff... how much you pay for blower stuff?

If you have someone install it labor will be a little more for an engine swap vs a blower install..

I would suggest LS1 swap WITHOUT A DOUBT. Not only will it make way more power but it will sound awesome! AND you will have better engine reliability.

ok, i checked all the prices around town and on the web. around town a shop priced me for an ls1 with 82,000 miles, tranny and exhaust and install would be $7800. procharger + install, probably around $4000. then you might as well get a new fuel pump, injectors, and forged pistons to get the best out of the procharger... about another $2300 (best guess). so say about $6300 after its all said and done. personally, the ls1 is more logically sound, figuring about another $1500 sets you even more horses than that of the procharger. also with the ls1, like you said, you could still modify and make better, faster and more powerful. also, yes i even checked on insurence, and i dont know who your insurence company is, but mine is state farm, and upon review of what i was asking, my monthly premiums would stay the same as the v6 since i would be keeping the same VIN number. so the power af a Z28 for the monthly premiums of a v6... beat that. but alas, my hard headedness got the better of me. instead of spending $8000 on an engine swap, im investing the same amount on upgrading damn near the whole car and also nitrous and/or supercharger. reason? everyone saying that a v6 isnt worth s#it and i "should just do a swap". well, im out to prove em wrong. but you do what you want.

Well, personally I am not trashing the V6 as I drive one myself. I am a commuter back and forth from college and the V8 drank more gas. When I took the V6 out on a test drive comparison testing, I broke the back end loose without even trying. That was enough to tell me I didn't NEED a V8.... although the exhaust tones IMO are so much sweeter. But I had to balance sportiness with practicality.

Turbos, nitrous, etc. work because they cause bigger explosions to force the pistons down. Therefore, you are hitting your pistons harder, your rods are being jerked at a faster rate than normal, and the crankshaft is taking some of that stress too. Other parts of the motor come into play, but those are the main parts that are getting the abuse when you upgrade. So at least you are taking care of some of that with the forged pistons/rods, which I am glad to hear is in the works with this upgrade.

I like the V6 motor because you have more room in the engine compartment to work with. Changing out my serpentine belt was just great, and I also like the location of our oil filter. I plan on keeping my V6 for as long as I own the car, but if I set the car up to race at the track, I would definitely consider the LS1 swap over the turbo upgrade.

Stick with a s/c. Make it a sleeper that can take some v8s. That will turn some heads.

that is freaking hilarious!!!!!!! you guys probably dont know me, but i did almost everything you could think of to my V6 cause i wanted to prove others wrong about the 6s. and i mean i had a mod list from hell! well it didnt work for me, i couldnt prove anything to anybody - except that my V6 was a POS. so what did i do? i swapped in an LS1. and get this...not for $8000...not for $7000....not for 6 or $5000 but for $4000 and change installed. you know what? i wish i had swapped 30,000 miles ago instead of doing the heads and cam. it is actually easier to do a swap than mod our V6 till its worth anything. and then you could mod the LS1 for even better results.

I did the swap myself and it costed about $3800.. I then sold all my V6 stuff for about that much as well.

So I went from a modified V6 to a stock LS1 that kicked *** for free.

Ls1 is a nice machine...

I have driven and owned 3800's V6 too, but the LS1 is by far my favorite car to drive.

....soon to have best of both worlds... V9 G trim sitting in my closet.

i was planning to turbocharge my car , add a nice cam for the turbo and more, but then i drove my friend ss. so that's all i needed to convinced myself that no matter what i do with my v6 it would never be fast and reliable as the v8. you guys can tell me that modding the v6 and all that crap, having fun in the v6 is better and bla bla bla, i'm done with this, i'm tired of investing money in my car. the car is on the garage shop right now cause i'm doing a rebuilding. i'll sell my v6 and get the REAL power on a Z28 or SS. i'm sorry for being rude but i'm really tired of this money goes to my V6. thank you guys and good luck.

I just did an LT1 swap, not exactly the same thing, but a V8 none the less. Trust me, a V8 is by far the best mod you can do to your car. Sure, its kinda neat to make a V6 fast- but in the end, who really cares? I mean pleanty of V8s pull much better times N/A. I respect what some guys can get an L36 to do, but thats not my thing. I bought the car because I was 16 and it was the best I could afford, not because I was dead set on having a 6-banger.

The swap cost $3200 including shipping, for EVERYTHING, and PCM tuning.

The torque and sound alone were worth it to me.

i was thinking about that swap before. i saved $3500 to invest in my car cause it was sitting in my garage for 3 or 4 months after a problem i had with the oil pump. i live in california and every mechanic i asked was telling me bad things about engine swap and state laws and all that crap. so i decided to rebuild the v6 with aftermarket parts so it could support a turbo or supercharge in the future (2 to 3 months). so i was thinking $3000 now, plus $3500 on the turbo and i don't know another $1000 installation. then i'm sure i need to get pcm programming cause i did the 3.42 gears change and i f*** up the shifting points and the speedo readings $400 more. then since i know myself would be the walbro fuel pump, the injectors, the gauges and bla bla bla. so total would be close to $9000 or more.
then (thanks god and my friend for give me the light ) i drove this beast, it's a 2002 camaro SS and the only modification he has done so far is the loudmouth and dynomax muffler, and that was it. i know i love my car, but when you really feel the V8 power, the V8 sound, you just forget about your car, then you start to think why in the HELL i spent that much money in my car.
for real dude, you can spent $10000 in your car doing everything to the engine only to find out that you're making let's say 320-340HP with a turbocharge, headers, cam, pistons, heads, you name it. i know that's a lot when you compare that with your stock 170-190hp. but please you only need $10000 to get a 99 Z28 with low mileages on it. you got that power with a stock car. then add LT headers, loudmouth, dynomax, airlid for like $1500 and you can get 50-60 hp.
so that would put you in 360-380 RWHP easy.
after 3 years of driving my baby i discovered that i'm love again. V8 all the way my friend.
Don't Even Think on Something Else.
Sell you car and Join the Force
Hope this help
