  • Titanium Connecting Rods

For a 3.4L Camaro, are Titanium Connecting Rods worth their price over Aluminum Rods or so on in terms of performance? Are they worth having, what about maintenance issues? I have been told that these can be used to great effect on Turbo/Supercharged or high compression/high HP engines.....Let me know what you think.

    Thanks

well first off, i'm curious as to where you found TI rods? I'm assuming they'd be custom? second, no, they would not be worth it. the factory rods we have in the 3.4 are quite stout already. If you are concerned with the rods breaking, i'd look into cryo treating them. And if you were doign the rods, might as well do the pistons, crank, and main caps.... i've been looking into that for a while myself. but in all honesty, those rods are hideously expensive and really not worth it for our motors... cryo treat the rotating assembly and see about finding (or making) a main stud girdle. thatll hold our motors together nicely..

Titanium rods would be $1500-$2000. Its not worth it. A set of custom aluminum rods are about $500-700 and they're not for street driving because aluminum work hardens and would eventually break. Keep the stockers or if you can find some forged 4340 steel rods, buy them.

Its my understanding that cryo treating parts prevents wear and does not actually strenthen the parts but i could be wrong, either way the stockers are fine for most anything you have in mind.

For starters, this post Was serious. I want to get the best performance out of my 3.4L that I possibly can while keeping the modification within the realms of sanity and practicality. As many people that encompass this forum, I can imagine that their goals here are as similar as mine, performance, get-up and go, etc. BTW, as far as gas mileage is concerned, I can always get a 4-banger for mileage....Pontiac Solstice anyone?

our rods are forged man.. i've seen people take our rods out, polish them, reinstall them, then rev their 60v6 to up to 7000 rpm. polishing the rods smooths the surface. surface irregularities create stress concentrations. these stress concentrations are where the part will break at. so if you can get rid of a lot of them, you'll end up with a stronger rod by removing a little bit of material. never leave sharp corners though; always be sure to keep radii where they currently exist.
as for cryo treating, one of its main benefits is it relieves certain types of interal material stresses cuased by two different types of carbon structures existing amongst each other. This will definatly increase durability and help the parts hold up to abuse more easily. Another benefit to cryo treating is that it makes a part more resistant to deformation, again due to changing the two internal carbon structures. the process has been shown to help for most applications like engine parts and brake parts and has shown little if any inherent problems associated with its use.

they are not forged??? i've been told all along by many many sources that our factory rods are indeed forged. them not being forged would be news to me.. and ftpp sells TI rods? All i could find is the one set of Al rods on there... am i missing something?

                            whoops not TI but AL

and your L32 3.4 rods are not forged, gm would not waste monye on NA 3.4 that only revs to 6000 rpm.

Now the L32 3.8 Series 3 (III)rods Are factory Forged, becuase the motor is boosted from GM they are the rods i have in my car...

                            don't confuse the motor codes

sorry viper.. dont mean to argue with ya or anything but GM did indeed waste money putting forged rods in an engine programmed to shut off at 6k rpms... however, that doesnt mean they wont handle up to 7k cause there are a few screamers out there that i'm aware of that regularely do it with the factory rods. the fact they are forged was verified to me by a gm tech.

as for the engine codes, yes i was aware of the difference.
