Increasing hp and gas mileage....?

I heard some guys talking at Autozone yesterday and one said that it's impossible to increase horsepower and gas mileage at the same time, that you're trading one for the other. Theoretically, is it possible to increase both at the same time? I'm thinking it is, if you increase the efficiency of the engine (VE for example.) Engine gurus, let's hear your input!

Exaust, Intake help with Fuel efficiency

I know that much cause after I did mine I gained 2 mpg

yea, they both help VE go up. others would be computer tuning, headers, heads, cam, lifters, ect. nething that makes the engine more efficient will make ur gas mileage go up, unless u keep ur foot in it a lot.

Also......changes would be lighter drive shaft....gear swap "within reason" Lighter TC...If the engine doe not have to work as hard there is more efficienty
